Hi all,
Before we were discharged from the hospital, Noel had an ultrasound to check on his kidney condition. The results were not what we expected -- the hydronephrosis in the left kidney had cleared completely, praise the Lord, but the US showed trace dilation of BOTH kidneys (left slightly worse than right). So the problem, if there is one, appeared much more minor, but seemed to be affecting both kidneys instead of just one, as it had appeared in utero.
Tomorrow morning at 10:45 AM, we go in for the follow-up appointment with the pediatric urologist so he can try to interpret these results and tell us what the next step is. Please pray for us.
Also, and this is really scaring me, Noel's newborn screening came back abnormal for CAH (congenital adrenal hyperplasia). We go in tomorrow morning at 9 AM for a second blood test to try and confirm or deny this result. Apparently, the state of Virginia sets their notification cutoff at 50 ng/mL, and Noel tested at 56. Most states set their cutoff at 65, so I am trying not to worry, plus preemies have a high false positive rate to begin with. So I am trying to remain optimistic that the second test will be normal. Please pray with me that the test will come back normal, or if, God forbid, he does have CAH, that it is a very mild case not requiring treatment (which includes lifelong multiple daily doses of steroids and injections when sick or injured). And pray that Noel would remain healthy while we wait for the results of the second test.
It seems like it's one thing after another here ... just please pray for my baby.
(As far as me, I got my stents from the bladder surgery out today and am feeling a whole lot better physically -- praise God for that.)
ETA: By the way, this is the baby you've been praying for. He smiles and giggles in his sleep all the time, even when he was in the NICU. He is sweetness personified. We love him so very much.
UPDATE #2
No news on the CAH thing yet (they stuck Noel FIVE times this morning  and sent the results off, so we should know something within three business days), but the kidney news is awesome -- the ped. urologist looked at the ultrasound, proclaimed it "well within normal range" and said all we need now is a follow-up sonogram when Noel is 2-3 months old just to really be sure he's okay .... but he thinks he IS okay. Whatever was there in utero, by God's grace, is gone now.
We are so thankful to everyone for their prayers and thankful to God for His provision. I have no explanation for how the kidney went from severely hydronephrotic to mildly hydronephrotic to completely fine in a matter of weeks, other than much prayer. To God be the glory! Please keep up the prayers regarding the CAH test -- we are so hopeful that it is a false positive, and we are praying for Noel to be given a totally clean bill of health.
