Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My mom asks me, my husband asks me, my kids ask me. I never can think of anything I want for myself. We live pretty simply and I don't like to accumulate "things." I don't wear jewelry or expensive clothes. My kitchen is serviceable. I have a new sewing machine.I have a stack of unread books on every subject imaginable.

Most things I really LONG for are for the children, not myself, you know?

Add to that I am trying to avoid plastic, battery-operated, and made in China for the entire family.

And my family will totally not go for the charitable donation instead of a gift route.

So, I'm coming to my favorite source of inspiration-you ladies!
What do YOU want for Christmas?

What a great topic, Theresa! I never have a good answer for this either. I'm not a very good gift giver either...sorta gift impaired across the board . I'll look forward to reading replies.

Love,

Here in town, there's a company called Super Suppers.

They make the meal - you bake it in your home.

Perhaps a gift of several meals?

Really, this isn't what I want for Christmas, though, but trying to throw an idea out there...

Three things I do want is some furniture from IKEA (to help with organization), a bigger house (but not too much bigger) and a new van (our's is on it's last leg - if a van can have a leg).

Because with God, all things are possible!

Yup.

It's the same situation here. What about some kind of lessons for you? Is there anything YOU would like to learn? Voice Lessons? Woodcarving? Crochet/Knitting? Oil/Watercolour Painting? Cathechesis of Good Shepherd Training? What about some more advanced sewing lessons?

Or is there anything that would make your school at home lifestyle easier? A new crockpot? New bookshelves, perhaps? Or something that would give you a lift in beautifying your suroundings? A new lamp/mirror/vase etc.

Gift cards to your favorite stores might work (that's what I want!), but I know that not everyone enjoys giving them.

I'm thinking out loud here, and I'm grasping at straws myself...
Hoping you find something wonderful for yourself!

I want the hefty, old fashioned iron from Vermont Country Store.

Well, it won't help you because it's so personal, but <sing with me here> "all I want for Christmas is my two front teeth, my two front teeth..."    Seriously.    I'd love to smile without keeping my lips closed.

Other than that.....maybe a book for me.

I want time . . . I would love help in organizing our books, or someone to watch the kids while I work on my ever-growing list of projects. I would love someone to watch the kids while DH & I got away for an hour or 2 by ourselves. The cost of a sitter just isn't in our budget these days.

Unfortunately, most of our family is far away and even if they were close I doubt it would happen anyway.

Meals are nice. My parents have ordered groceries for us a few times in the past (they can order online and it is delivered to my door) and that has been a welcome gift. (and a time saver, too!)

I am always asking for memberships to local museums, gardens, etc. This year, I don't think I paid for a single membership - they were all gifts! (2 museums, the zoo and the botanical gardens)

I'd love gift certificates to Shutterfly so I can make more photo albums, and print photos for ourselves (too often, I am printing photos and making albums for gifts)

From my kids, I've asked for homemade things -- a picture, a note, a bookmark. Those are the special things! Even from DH -- a love note is a wonderful gift that I cherish and worth more to me than material gifts. (and it's a struggle for him to share in that way . . . which I know, but it makes it that much more meaningful.)

I want this light so that my older eyes can see my crafts and sewing projects at night.

I have asked my dh and my 3dc that work....so....hopefully...

Actually, I want an Ipod (or similar less-expensive option). The few CDs I do have always end up scratched in the van, and I would love to pick and choose songs to download to make a custom play list.

Other than that, I can't think of much. Gift certificates are always good. And I could always use a new nursing shirt!

Of course, I have learned over the years not to expect to receive what I ask for, even when I am very specific. Just part of being Mom, I guess.

bridget mentioned an iron... I haven't ironed in about 8 years because that's when I got an upright steamer, and I think every mom should have one! It takes all the major wrinkles out of shirts in about 20 seconds. It's what I'd ask for, if I didn't already have one!

or,
coffee, tea, chocolate, wine!

how about something like the chant CD from the Carmelite monks of wyoming? that'd be like a gift & tithe in one...

gift cert. for a day spa (for that ONE day next year that you'll have someone around to babysit!)

I usually ask for a Homeschool magazine subscription - especially to those mags that I really want but I feel bad spending the money on, like Home Education Magazine or Live Free, Learn Free or Life Learning Magazine. The latter two are unschooling ones.

But yeah, a lot of times I ask for gift certificates to places so I can get things for school for the kids.

I like music cd's, too. I really like the group Anonymous 4 - the first cd I got from them was called

1000: A Mass for the end of Time which is: "with a disc of chant from around the year 1000--specifically, a Mass for the Feast of the Ascension." You can listen to samples at the Amazon link. I love their older stuff, and dh tries to get me one at Christmas each year. Oh! Another good one from them is La Bele Marie: Songs to the Virgin from 13th-Century France.

I want knitting stuff. Or statues of Our Lady. Or earrings. I tend to ask for those same things every year. It will help some that my LYS(local yarn shop) has a wish list this year, so I can go in and put on paper some of the things I would like.

Not that I want this, but I always, ALWAYS appreciate it when my mother sends us a huge order from Omaha Steaks. Food gifts are always great for a large family, and I think my mom must realize this more than I do, as I would never think of it myself!

But I usually ask for a gift card to a bookstore. And who do I buy books for??? Myself? Uh, not usually.

I'm not much on jewelry, either, but if my husband were to ask this year, I would tell him to go to the booth tomorrow after Mass where a fellow homeschooling mom is selling some absolutely beautiful religious jewelry and pick out a nice beaded necklace w/a Crucifix or a Miraculous Medal.

DH's friends laugh when he tells them I don't go for jewelry or clothing for gifts. I'd more than likely ask for a new kitchen appliance. Once it was a bread machine, and two years ago it was an awesome Kitchen Aid standing mixer...something I use nearly every day! Yep, I like practical gifts.

Oh! I thought of something that I actively want! Either a gift certificate for Adagio Teas or, specifically, their IngenuiTEA .

Now I have to tell dh , as he has been asking .

I would really like a pair of earrings. I only have small gold hoops and would like to be able to alternate once in a while. I would also like a new pair of pajamas, subscriptions to Victoria or Faith and Family magazines, or Catholic Mosaic. I know my husband would never buy me any of those, though. He prefers to surprise me, and he would never think of these on his own.

The gadget queen in me has surfaced and I am coveting an Ipod Touch. I even "banked" my birthday presents from dh and my mother in October so that I could have one for Christmas .

Less extravagant things I would like ...

Amazon gift certificate

Craft store gift certificate

A nice rosary - I found a gorgeous one I was going to get for my birthday a couple of years ago, but when I went back to the shop to buy it they no longer had it, and there just wasn't another I liked anywhere near as much. I would love one of the rosaries that can be customised with words or names that someone posted a link to here a while ago.

Good wine (though not this year )

New pajamas. In PINK. The current pjs I wear were those I wore in the hospital with Cecilia and those I wore in the hospital with James. I want new ones for my next hospital trip.

And Sees candy. Dark chocolate. But only a pound so my pjs will still fit.

Theresa, I have been thinking of this thread most of the day. I was thinking more for you, as I have been given more than I could ever ask.   I was thinking you should get good quality winter garmets for when you move to Alaska. Or snow shoes, or a nice basket to keep all your nature study equipment in. I am thinking of a backpack basket. Or and this is cool, a field easel! I love the peaceful thought of you and the children painting by some glorious stream in Wild Alaska, the salmon jumping and the sun shining. I can see it now. Oh and get some nice quality paints and canvas'.
Thats it for now, thanks for the fun thread
