I bought an itty bitty Revere Ware skillet at Salvation Army a while ago to melt butter in(I was in my replacing aluminum phase, so was looking specifically for it).

Try the trusty old cast iron frying pan with a spot of oil (or not) and a lid that fits (I use one from one of my pots) to heat up rice. We add some crushed garlic and this is one of my ds fave. breakfasts! (He is not a breakfast food person)

Has anyone ever tried one of these mug warmers to keep their coffee hot? I wonder how long it would take to heat up a cool cup.

There is an article here.
However, we do have a microwave, used mainly for heating up our "corn bag" heat pack, and microwave popcorn....
I don't know how else to heat up that heat pad/corn bag, and we use that a lot....

We haven't had a microwave for over 10 years. I think one of the biggest issues in regards to microwaves being unhealthy is the containers- plastics leach horrid stuff, paper towels contain bleach, etc.

you adjust your other appliances too.. for instance.. I use a toaster oven.. it takes up way less space than a microwave and only a bit more than a toaster.. and that lets you heat up small amounts easily.. especially nice for that piece of pizza I've also heated up mashed potatoes in it on one of the little baking sheets.
Rice.. as others have said.. a bit of water and/or oil in a pot with a lid and heat and stir and it heats up rice (or pasta) pretty easily. Mashed potatoes on the stovetop I just do like I was flipping a potato pancake.. even if I add nothing extra just want to reheat.. it works.

This is what I have heard and read too -- the molecular change that happens in the mircrowave to the food is unhealthy.
We haven't had one in our house since we've been married (2.5 yrs). You really do learn to just do without.
My worst thing is when I need soft butter for a recipe and my butter is rock hard from the fridge and no microwave to soften it. Arg. I hate that.

Mary Theresa - it's not as fast as a microwave.. but remember if you take it out and slice it up.. then set it somewhere warm.. it doesn't take very long at all to soften
Can you tell I've done this often?

I put my coffee in a travel mug first thing in the morning. It works really well and even if the kids take me away from my coffee, it stays pretty hot for a couple hours. We also have a carafe and a thermos both of which are sometimes used to keep coffee hot for later in the day. Those are both much cheaper than a microwave!
We do the little bit of water in the pot method as well. Also, for plain pasta you can put it in a colander and pour boiling water over it.

We've been microwave free for about 5 years now.
Dh read in the Lancet medical journal about what a microwave does to baby formula-there were carcinogens found in it. Since our microwave was breaking at the time (coming on spontaneously when not in use--we've had 2 do this in our lifetime), we decided to go without.
I think there was also something dh found about microwaves being invented for Nazi soldiers to use in battle. . .it may sound a bit wacko, so who knows.
We just figured that if it can altar baby formula that much, what can it do to other foods. We just decided not to risk it.
Like everyone said. . .use pans, a little water in the bottom, and you're set!
I cannot imagine life with a microwave now. Where would I put it. . .they take up so much precious space.

Okay Ladies, I've been microwave free for several months now. I like how hot my tea and coffee are straight from the stovetop, and we all adore pan-fried pizza leftovers - so crispy!
But.
What do you do with that nasty dish sponge? I've always microwaved it after washing dishes and now I toss it in with the towels when I wash but once a week is not cutting it. DH prefers a sponge with the scratchy scrubby side but it is seriously grossing me out and I'm about ready to fry it too. Should I store it in a dish of bleach water??? Blleeachhh - If you stretch it out and lower your voice it sounds gross too!
Buying 7 sponges a week doesn't fit into my budget so help me out...

I used to have dish rags with the scrubby side, I want to say 3M makes them.
We don't use the microwave a lot, but I keep telling DH that when he wants to heat water for one cup of tea, the microwave does it cheaper...now I need to check that out and be sure it is true We do have one or two of the mug warmers, I should dig those out. It never fails that my hot coffee gets cold before I get to drink it in the mornings.

what about using an anti-bacterial product on the sponge? there's natural ones.. I've heard of bac-out.. but I've heard that the one you get at the pet store is cheaper.. and there's GSE (grapefruit seed extract)
And be sure you have somewhere to put hte sponge so that it dries between uses.. that helps lots too.

I throw my sponge in the dishwasher!
Years ago a young student did a science fair project where he proved that putting toothbrushes in the dishwasher destroyed germs as well as expensive commercial toothbrush sanitizers (which apparently are used by medically fragile people). I figure if the dishwasher can handle toothbrush germs, it can easily extend the life of a kitchen "scrubby" sponge!
My DH buys our sponges at Costco in a big pack, so we do replace them pretty frequently, but in between times the dishwasher seems to do the trick.

I'm presuming you don't have a dishwasher, because I just load mine in it to zap it of the bacteria.
The boiling water that you make with your tea would work great. And just teach dh to run dishsoap and hot water and squeeze it out after each use. Keeps it cleaner that way.
Two of my pet peeves -- finding the sponge in the sink instead of on the side or in a dish. It always seems to be in there when milk or something blech is put into the sink, thereby making the sponge icky.
And the second is a smelly gross sponge. I admit we buy them in bulk, but don't change them everyday.

Jenn, you're right. No dishwasher on this boat!
I think we're definitely headed into the heat and humidity of the summer and things on the boat just aren't drying out the way they did a few weeks ago. We hang the sponge in a little holder in the sink to drain and dry after rinsing, it just hasn't been drying lately!
I really like the boiling water idea better than the frypan, ladies. I'll have to give that a try!

My sister used to call her microwave the world's most expensive popcorn popper! And that popcorn is so not good for you! We use an air popper.
We were free of a microwave for a very long time, but now that we have teens, it seems to be a necessity for them, I'm not sure why? A friend of ours used to be so upset that we didn't have one...could't understand how I kept Dan's dinner warm when he had to work late. Umm... the oven, perhaps?
