If you only had 5 toy/toy sets in your home what would they be, regardless of price?

They can be educational or for either gender, indoor or outdoor.

List your top 5.

I only have a second, let's see if I can come up with five!

-play silks (in our case ours are just many different gauzy/silky lengths of fabric bought on clearance at the craft store, that the girls use as everything - dress ups, blankets, forts, etc)

-cardboard "bricks", again, these get much use here (more for my under 8 set, although my 9yo participates!)

-play dough and similar (clay, sculpey, etc)

-and only because my 4 and 2yo love them SO much and play with them most of every day: Polly Pockets. I would rather get rid of them, though! I'm thinking of trying to "replace" them with something similar but better this Christmas.

Well that is only 4! My girls usually don't play with toys, they are more likely to be playing pretend games with each other, reading, doing crafts/drawing, or listening to audiobooks.

I'm interested in seeing what other people say - despite what I just said above, I still feel like I need to get them *something* toy-ish for Christmas and their upcoming birthdays.

1)dress up - hands down winner

2) hotwheels cars - very close runner up

3)legos (still using duplos here.. we apparently like the size we can get building with them not to mention I can't handle the little ones with babies about)

4)lincoln logs.. kids love them when we get them out, but I think they'd get better use with MORE.. it's just hard for several kids to play with them when there's too limited of amount

5) baby dolls and other "house" playing items

oh dear..

6) larger plastic animals

oh or outdoors.. that's hard.. does sports equipment count? when they use them for that sport? because lacrosse equipment is high on our priorities

and bikes? and scooters?

and snow equipment? sleds and snow shoes and snow block makers

See we shift by season and by age and by gender..

So the hotwheels and lg animals see as much play as the dolls and house stuff.. everyone uses the dress up.. all but the baby use the sports and bikes and snow equipment.. everyone uses the lego and lincoln log.

ok I can't take anything out but I will say this.. I rarely have all that out at the same time. bikes and scooters aren't out when the snow equipment is.. lacrosse equipment is kept put away and used with permission.. and usually only either the lincoln logs or legos are out. Most of the dress up is put away when the dolls and such are out.. and hotwheels and large animals are usually out.. the little boys use those so much.

My kids' favourites are Playmobil, Lego, Calico Critters, wooden building blocks and the Only Hearts Club dolls. And they often mix them altogether into a huge, room-to-room game

Okay keep in mind that I only have boys

1. Balls of all sorts for the basement or outside - our hands down winner for all ages
2. Legos
3. Costume box -- mostly superheroes and cowboys
4. Train set
5. Cars with a mat

Those are the toys that need to be cleaned up every day, so they must be the ones that they use the most.

Mine love:

  1. dress up clothes
  2. craft stuff (sculpey, crayons, colored pencils, wood, you name it!)
  3. legos & k'nex
  4. dolls -- incl the boys' castle with little characters
  5. Plan City wooden car set -- we've had this for a few years now and it's great fun ... and so sturdy!

These are definitely the ones that get played ALL the time...other things come and go (games, character toys, etc), but these are the standbys!

I only have two girls who are pretty little, but their favorites every day are:

1. dress up clothes/jewelry/my shoes/blankets (to play "Mary")

2. wooden puzzles

3. a combo of wooden blocks and little people animals (for some reason they always want both together)

4. sidewalk chalk for outside or crayons inside - this is and every day thing

5. board books - I read them story books, but only let them have unlimited access to their board
books since they are more durable. I find my girls sitting on their little couch in their playroom looking at books all the time!

paper and any writing utensil you can grab

tons and tons of dress up clothes

every blanket we own (mega forts in the basement)

little plastic/wood animals (pretty much any small play figurine, they mix up every kind of character you can imagine for some very inventive scenes and dramatic stories, i swear, some days I think all the kids will be directors or actors)

legos/k'nex/blocks

dolls

play kitchen/food/pots and pans

did i say paper...yeah...lots and lots of paper

Shawna's list pretty much sums up mine.

I would say:

Girls: Dollhouse

Boys: a soccer ball for one/ a football for the other

And lots of lots of play-doh, clay, and...Maria is right...lots and lots of paper (and crayons).

I cant think of five but the top 4 they play with MOST of the time is their dress up clothing, stuffed animals, transformer toys(they got their love for them from dh ) and craft type stuff(drawing/coloring, cutting, pasting etc.). Everything else is played with maybe 2-3x a week at the most.
