Hello!
I just finished listening to an audio of the Secret Garden so that I can share in the fun of some of the books my daughter has read, thanks to Librivox. I enjoyed it so much!! I love Dicken's mother in the book with her common sense and her wisdom and how her daughter Martha "handles" Mary Lennox and doesn't cater to her whims, but instead gets her to do things for herself.
I love the visual picture of a mother at work. This led me to wonder, what other mothers in literature have inspired you as a mom?
I will eagerly await your responses! I want to keep a running list for myself.

Marmee gets my vote, too. She was so wise, yet willing to let her girls try things for themselves, knowing they'd grow from the experience.
(Also, she was a deployed military spouse...holding down the home front while Mr. March was away at the front.)

I REALLY liked Ma in the Little House series ... she was firm but always loving and she did a great job letting Pa be the "head". She never said "I told you so" or argued with him about moving ... I wish I could be more like that! 
I never like Marmee -- the name reminded me of "smarmee" and a little too much goodness ....  .
I too liked the Mrs. Sowerby in Secret Garden ... she is such an amazingly calm influence but gets excited with the kids ....

Just finished Little Women this summer and have to say that I really like Marmee. Ma from Little House would be a close second.

I  Ma Ingalls and Marmee but, just to be different ...
I loved Mamsie from Five Little Peppers and How They Grew . Read that book and reread that book countless times when I was in fifth grade.

You reminded me of another mom I really liked. The mom from All of a Kind Family. I loved the way she motivated the girls in their chores--she hid pennies where they would only be found if they had done a thorough job.
I remembered reading that and thinking, I better take notes on that.
Okay my wheels are spinning now--
Another one I liked was the grandmother in Heidi. She had so much insight into Heidi and was able to minister to Heidi's heart when she was missing the Grandfather so much.

I second Anne Shirley Blythe too.
It's funny you mentioned her and I forgot about her. We just listened to an amazing audio of Rilla of Ingleside and it focuses on Rilla's adventures and WWI and Anne as a matronly mother (pretty much the age I'm at now) sending her oldest boys off to college and war. Having read the early series of Anne of Green Gables as a girl this was like coming home for me. It spoke to me right where I am now and portrayed the Anne of my girlhood as the Anne of my motherhood. She's a wonderful mentor.
I eagerly picked-up Rainbow Valley (which comes before "Rilla" but haven't gotten around to reading it yet.

Yes! Anne Shirley Blythe is SUCH a beautiful mother and I love those last couple of books in the series as much as the first couple.
Ma from Little House is also inspirational. I would like to BE more like Ma and I find that if I am reading those books for a certain period of time, I become more 'Ma-ish' and let me tell you, that is a very good thing!!

Okay...since we've been reading this series this year, I feel like I am friends with Mrs. Mitchell from the Hilda VonStockum Mitchell family series. She makes me laugh and still handles a crazy life with grace, trily my kind of gal.

I was going to say Marmee at first, because I just finished re-reading parts of "Little Women". I've always loved Anne, though. I always feel so Anne-ish after I read all the Anne books.
I don't know if some of you would agree with this one, but I'm kind of partial to Molly Weasley from the Harry Potter books. I love how she just adopted Harry like he was one of her own. And when she looks at the boggart her "worst fear" is that a member of her large family (including Harry) might be killed. She just seems very real, from her ranting to her worrying. And her relationship with Mr. Weasley is so sweet.
And, Mary G., my two-year old just came over and saw your picture on the computer. She immediately start laughing and pointing, saying "She's so happy! She's smiling!" It was very sweet.

I am SOglad you said this! This was my very first thought the other day when I read the thread, but then everyone was naming characters from more classic lit, and I chickened out of posting...
I do adore Ma Ingalls also, but Molly was who popped into my head first!

I know not as many of you have read Little Britches, but that mother is amazing! She has 6 kids and then the husband dies. At the time, she's expecting another child and starts to run a family business! Her love, courage and good spirit are really exemplary...
She also emphasizes good education and reads aloud the Bible and classic literature to her kids.
Even better, its a true story!
If you haven't read those books, the first 3 are great for a family read aloud.

Mrs. Mitchell is very cool. She can laugh at disasters and copes admirably with lots of kids. (A Navy wife through and through...she has her moments of worry...but manages somehow.)
