Did you know that, in his day, Riley was so well known for his optimism that the phrase "living the life of Riley" actually comes from him?! Somehow, I don't think Lemony Snicket would approve! |

I didn't know that. Matter of fact, when I walk out the carport door and find my son's Boxer/Lab mix sound asleep, I usually say, "Eh, the life of Riley, huh ol' girl." Peppy just winks her eye at me then puts her head back down. The kids have often asked, "Mom, you always say that. Who's Riley?"
I have always lamely answered, "Guess it was a lazy dog."
Now I'll have an educated answer.

And you probably all know this already, but if there are any newcomers to HSing reading this, you'll find a good sampling of many of the above good poets and poetry in "Harp and Laurel Wreath" .. . a compilation by Laura Berquist. I can't do the linky thing right now...

Oh and lest we forget... my kids LOVE Shel Silverstein... if only they'd memorize their other poems as well and happily as they do his silly poems...

Hey, I always thought Riley was a lazy dog, too!
I love that poem, "The Days Gone By", and finally memorized it thanks to the music cd by the same name. Everytime I hear/read/recite/sing that poem, I get all emotional...sniff sniff.

Oh, yes, Kelly, I meant to recommend that CD as well. The Days Gone By, Songs of the American Poets by Ted Jacobs is one of the best CDs ever, with poetry by Emily Dickinson, James Whitcomb Riley, Edgar Allen Poe, and several other great American Poets, all set to beautiful music. A Child's Garden of Song by the same artist is excellent as well.

Some wonderful suggestions here. My favorites, not necessarily for the children, are:
Robert Burns
William Blake (poor philosphy - lovely poetry)
Shakespeare's Sonnets (the first gift I gave my husband was a copy of the sonnets)
John Donne (Dave and I have a quote from a John Donne poem engraved in our wedding bands. One half in his and the other in mine)
T.S. Eliot (Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock has been a favorite for a long time)
W.B. Yeats (love Leda and the Swan)
Edgar Allan Poe (for the dark me).
That's what I can think of off the top of my head. For those interested in poet laureates here is a cool link. It is a Library of Congress Poet Laureate timeline for the first part of the 20th century. The site has many other features as well.
