Like Nancy I think SB coffee tastes burned.
We've switched to half decaf/half regular French Roast from Baltimore Tea and Co., with a French press pot, it is delicious. But SB is not really about just coffee--it seems to be about lattee, foamy, frothy, vanilla, chai.... I love listening to my sister order her coffee when she talks to me on her way to work, "Soy , latte, triple shot..."
That said, I do not think SB is about the coffee entirely. I think it is about finding a place where you can get something just the way you want it in a setting without laundry/chores/paperwork piling up, unless you bring it along and then you have a set amount of work to do. The couches are comfortable, the tables are intimate so if you bring a friend you can focus on that person and not worry about the tidying for a visitor. We want the intimacy of a pub without the beer or of our grandmother's kitchen table where we can visit and relax.
I feel manipulated when I find that the company uses the settled environment I seek to further its diversity agenda. Until their bottom line is adversly altered, there will not be a corporate shift. So I try to stay away and inform others when I can.
We now have a SB within 25 minutes and a Borders opened 15 minutes away--do they have coffee shops? The SB town does have a few small places . In the other direction we have a college town with some great small places. So we have choices if I want the "away from it all" experience.
But what do you do when you travel? Cannot find a good, small place, are away from your own coffee pot and you need to sit and regroup with a bit of something hot and sweet?

Oh, I think you are so right, Viv. We do have two other coffee shops nearby, a Caribou and a Daily Grind. Seating is a little limited at the former, but both are just fine. As I was reading your post, though, I was reminded of Alice's suggestion for tea and friendship. What we really want isn't the yuppie neighborhood Starbucks; it's the intimate and relaxing atmosphere of something just for Mom. Maybe we can provide that for each other.

Thank you for mentioning this, Elizabeth. We are having our tea a week from Wednesday. It will be nothing fancy, yet I know all the moms will have fun. We will start with a Rosary and then just sip tea (and coffee), eat a few sweets, and chat. If I could have one wish, it would be to sit across a table with you and all the other moms on this list. What a joy that would be!
[As I type this, I am sipping a coffee from that Bunn coffee maker recommended earlier in this thread. It is truly the best, especially in a paper cup (we keep a supply) to give it that take-out feel.]

The ones here do - and their mocha is positively scrumptious!
