Good news!
All the prayers have certainly been effective -- when the specialist took a look this morning, the problem seemed much less severe than we were originally led to believe. Basically, he has an obstruction, but it is partial and so some of the urine is clearing out and some is not. The cysts are smaller than they suspected. They reclassified his condition from "severe" to "mild-moderate."
All talk of losing a kidney has been dropped, praise the Lord! Right now they want to take a wait-and-see approach. Now that we've established a baseline, I go back in two weeks for another ultrasound to assess how things are going. If it's gotten worse, we'll start discussing the in utero procedure -- but they think they will be able to wait until the baby is further along to do that if it turns out to be necessary, thus reducing the risk of long term problems for baby if I were to go into labor early because of the procedure.
But the most likely outcome is that we will just keep an eye on the problem until Noel is born, at which point he will see a pediatric urologist and then we can decide what (if anything) to do. There is even a small chance it could clear up on its own, and we are definitely praying for that! But it is unlikely, so we are prepared for the probability of minor surgery after the birth if needed.
I thank you all for your prayers and ask that if you think of it in the coming weeks, just pray a Memorare or two for Noel's long term health and holiness. A wonderful priest challenged me to try to get 10,000 Memorares prayed for Noel before his birth (from multiple sources, not each person asked!), so I am shamelessly asking for your prayers.
I am so relieved and grateful right now! Thank you, God.

Wonderful news! When I was pregnant with Louis, my youngest, I got similar news with U/S #1. As it turned out, whatever they saw righted itself and he is fine. I pray that Noel will have the same outcome.
Still praying!

Here's one:
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me.
Amen.

I'll pray one now and try to remember to pray them for you all, especially when I get e-mail updates on this thread. The Memorare happens to be my favorite "special intention" prayer of late

I've prayed a memorare.
My three dc all had kidney problems diagnosed in utero (dilated renal pelvises). I know this is different from your son's problem, but I just wanted to say that sometimes U/S is wrong and sometimes things just sort themselves out on their own -- well, with the help of God!

I prayed a Memorare for you!
Our first daughter had the same condition and we were told she would only have one functioning kidney--we stormed heaven and at the next ultrasound, her kidney was perfectly normal--never a problem after that. That is my prayer for you, much love to you and your family!
