I have bought patterned, sweater tights off e-bay.

I look for "lots" (several pair grouped together, usually by size) which saves on shipping.

Some names I look for:

hanna
lands end
tic tac toe
MP
gymboree

The "old" Hannas seem to wear the best. The new ones just aren't the same . (probably made in china ). We also get marked down tights at the outlet Hanna store near us.

ETA: most of the "used ebay tights" are in excellent / almost new condition.....beacause....HA!....NO ONE wears tights for "every day"!!!!

Seems I just CANNOT talk about ebay without going there to "see"......

Look at [this lot. 4 pair!!! hardly worn or brand new...Steinlein German, Children's Place, MP, all size 8!!! These are GREAT tights for a total of $20!

Also, if you're going the legging/sock route....Amy at Ringger Clothing is taking orders for leggings - girls and womens sizes at very reasonable prices ($7.50 & 8.50). Lots of colors and Made in the USA. She is getting ready to place the first order in the next couple of days, so if you're interested, let her know!

A place for partly cotton tights for age 12+ is Talbots. They have 60% cotton tights for $9 each. The large fits my 12 year old daughter, but they also carry XL (to size 16).
We just purchased 2 pair, so I am not sure how well they wear. But they feel nice!
