Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am going on the seventh night of less than 4 hours of sleep. I have a ridiculous cough that only affects me when I recline at all, so I have been unable to sleep all week. It seems to wear itself out by about 4:30am each morning, so I pass out for a couple of hours, with a few snatches of sleep throughout the night.

At this point, I am just a mess. I want to cry at the prospect of another night awake, coughing. I am taking Robitussin, drinking tea with honey, sucking on cough drops, everything I can think of. But I keep have the spasms.

Could you just say a quick prayer if you are up that I can get some sleep tonight and that I can get rid of this cough?

Thank you.

Molly, I coughed through my last two pregnancies - it turned out that pregnancy triggers asthma for me, though I am not normally asthmatic. Inhalers helped a lot.

Second time round I was still coughing even once the asthma was controlled, to the point where I was referred to a pulmonary specialist. He cured the cough by prescribing me something to suppress stomach acid. Apparently there is some connection between the nerves that respond to heartburn and the nerves that trigger coughing. So if you have heartburn, it could be that this is connected to the cough.

Kathryn, was the cough in your throat? This is all in my throat, like a constant tickle. Of course, I am coughing so hard as to rattle my whole body, but there is no congestion or tightness in my chest.

I am so frustrated.

Payers, Molly. I spent many nights sleeping upright in a recliner during my pregnancies when I had a lingering cough.

Molly, make sure it is not Petussin. This happened to a friend 3 yrs ago while she was pregnant. It went undiagnosed until her baby was born and of course caught it. Then I did and my whole family was under quarantine because we don't immunize. I am not trying to freak you out, just wanted to give you a heads up. Pertussin in adults is not the whooping it is in infants and children. I know others are reporting it to be going around. Yes even in vaccinated children and adults    Praying this is not your situation!

Praying, Molly ....sleep deprivation is such a downer... I too have heard of the Pertussis connection and also the GI reflux so it might be good to consult your doctor or health care professional.

I talked to a midwife and she said to take something stronger over the counter tonight and then to be seen in the morning.

I am at the end of my rope. Thanks for the prayers. Please pray that tonight will be better.

I gave in and took Nyquil last night, per the midwife's suggestion. It really knocked me out, so I did get some sleep, although it didn't help the coughing so much so it was still very fitful.

I took a dose this morning, too, because I couldn't get to a doctor (no sitter). So, I slept for a few more hours while the toddler napped and the older kids played games.

DH is staying home tomorrow morning so I can get checked out. I am getting sicker and probably will endup on some medication.

Thank you all for the prayers!

I am so sorry you feel this way Molly! I know what it is like not to sleep while pregnant. I will keep you in my prayers! If it is any help, we all went through some kind of strange lingering cough this past spring.   I ended up taking the breathe easy tea by Traditional Medicinals and it helped me get through the night...that and the throat coat tea...killed some of that tickling....

I'm so sorry, Molly! I hope that the doctor can give you some answers and some medicine that works tomorrow! My grandmother has coughing fits at night and the doctors have tried many things with her. What has helped the most, though (usually completely takes care of it) is to gargle with some saline nasal solution -- 0.9% sodium chloride. She squirts it in her nose and down her throat right before bed. Praying for you!
