Rachel, that's funny...because I always used to wonder about my midwestern relatives' obsession with weather-related conversation. Then, I moved east. Now I know...when your weather changes hourly, you NEED to talk about it!
(LOL...we used to wear wool sweaters in 60-degree weather, too...)

Why would you want to live there? Because California is positively awesome! We lived in Virginia for a few years when I was little, but I was born and lived most of my life in California. The weather is great, the ocean is beautiful, there's so much to see and do. I hope we can move back one day (though we lived in northern California near San Jose).
Edited to add dittos to the Trader Joe's, California Missions, and In-n-Out Burger.

I thought of one you'll really like, Elizabeth...
PRODUCE!
Think peaches as big as your husband's fist in ten different varieties and every one tastes like the peach in James in the Giant Peach, not the mealy flavorless golfballs they sell under the same name over here. Artichokes, strawberries, mangoes, zucchini, and real real oranges. Everything big and juicy and flavorful. I've never seen nor eaten the variety of fresh produce that I did in California. Once when I was visiting, I made such a fuss at the farmer's market that a woman asked me where I was from! (Even the Trader Joes are undersized here.)
And Nancy, I had a closet FULL of wool sweaters for those frigid winter mornings.

I'm partial to the Bay Area myself , but I've got one for you, Elizabeth--a whole new world of nature to discover and, as others have mentioned, fabulous weather to do it in!

I grew up there. It's not without its benefits, chiefly the weather and beaches. Also, traffic is actually not as bad as it is here, because there are more routes to get around because the area is designed for car traffic. I was shocked by the DC area mess when I moved here from LA, and it's only gotten worse the last nine years. So that will be an improvement for you. The shopping is awesome. Did I mention the weather? And WAY less bugs. And it's a fun, less intense place in general than DC. People work to live instead of living to work, which is nice.
WARNING: Less positive stuff to follow, sorry! Stop reading if you want!
Without knowing your financial situation, I will suggest you ask them for a massive relo package -- housing is way more expensive for what you get in LA. It's not that prices are that different in general, it's that the houses are much smaller and don't have basements for extra finished space. This is usually fine because people have small families and much of life is lived outdoors in that climate anyway, but with a family as big as yours, you need space. And space costs a pretty penny in CA.
