Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Years ago when we did this we had to get the TV out of the living room and put away, to be taken out for special DVD'S.

If it's sitting there, it calls me to turn it on. . .

Its been WONDERFUL not to have TV.

We have occasional DVD's.

We haven't had a television for years - we've been married 12 years and had one for maybe 2 years of that time, on and off. The most recent time we had TV was when we plugged it back in on 9/11. We kept it plugged in for a couple of days, and then as we were unlicensed and it was basically illegal we unplugged it and were consumed with guilt!

We have a dvd player and a portable tv, and maybe once or twice a month will watch a movie from our collection or that we rent, but it so seldom seems worth it. We make it awkward by putting all the bits away in a locked cupboard and making the plugging in business a pain - which also looks ugly [we use extension cables] so I want it packed away asap after the film is over. We only have it in our room too, so we are not tempted to let our son watch something on his own.

The reason we had to just dump the tv viewing was not that we are so holy but because we're not. We would watch too much, we would watch shows that did not honour God and that did not edify us. It was like a horrible brain numbing, soul sapping evil influence. If we had more self-control we would like to watch a few things - mainly documentaries and the Grand Prix [for dh!] but we remind ourselves that the Lord said to cut off the sinning hand, so we "amputated" it. And if we ever weaken and buy an inappropriate dvd (for us that is something like CSI) we just take the loss and dump it as soon as possible after we know we were wrong.

We did it all at once. When we moved, we just didn't sign up for cable, and we have no reception out here in the boonies. So the TV is here, but only gets used for DVDs or things we watch online (you can watch EWTN online). Don't miss it at all. Everyone gets more done. Won't go back to it.
