I just noticed your question. I haven't tried it with the good wool felt yet. Michael is very allergic to wool as well. He's not going to be crafting with us this fall.
It's a great question. Both books emphasize wool felt over the other. The acrylic felt is more loosely woven and thinner. I'm not sure how this is going to work.
I'm going to learn to knit too. I'm absolutely not going to attempt to do that with woolen yard. i think that would require too much and prolonged contact. With the dolls, I'm figuring on lots of supervising and Mary Beth and Paddy doing the actual hands on.

I think this package has a large variety for a reasonable price. I'm going to try it and if I don't like it, it's reasonable enough that I wouldn't mind adding to the kids craft drawer.

RE: Wool allergies. What I've read suggests that wool allergies come from the lanolin. There are wools lower in lanolin - alpaca has almost none, but is pricey. Icelandic wool (which we hope to be raising!) has less lanolin than most other sheep also. Merino might also be a good choice.

However, most lanolins are washed away when the wool is processed. And I'm inclined to think that the finer the wool, less likely you are to get scratched, thereby not allowing any trace lanolin into your skin.

Doing a google search on alpaca felt/roving/batts (or Icelandic, or Merino) should yield excellent results. Beware wool washes ending in "lan" because they are designed to condition the wool using natural lanolin.
