Yep....almost EVERYTHING in LL Bean, Lands End, Hanna Andersson says "imported." My husband typed up a quick letter yesterday that requests that these catalogue companies specify where something is made. This "imported" word is so wimpy. He's mad at Cabela's!!!! When you call them, most of their stuff is "Asia". And, we all know what THAT means.
I just called Hanna Andersson and randomly chose about 10 item numbers and asked them to tell me where they are made.....EVERYTHING (except the tights-made in Lithuania) is MIC!!!!!! So, 9 out of 10 items....made in China! Of course the gal told me that Hanna is VERY picky about the quality of their factories, etc. Blah! I told her that we're also concerned about the trade/national security and supporting China in general, so we wouldn't be buying anything except tights from them .
ETA: I was mistaken....the loose leggings (Hanna) are made in Peru. So, 8 out of 10.

Sierra Trading Post is a good place to go to find out where things are made before you buy them. It is listed on the VAST majority of the things in the catalog, and online (sierratradingpost.com). And their Bargain Barn is a NIIIIICE place to look and find some good bargains!!
There are still lots of MIC things, but it is good to know that those shirts I am buying come from someplace else...

This company really does have lots of made in USA products. http://www.novanatural.com/ In fact, they even purchase items from Camphill.
"Camphill is dedicated to social renewal through community building with children, youth, and adults who have disabilities. In a time where many are experiencing a crisis of spirit and search for meaning, Camphill offers a life of celebration, service, and community building in which all participants flourish."
We bought the shield, sword & helmet for our son (he thinks he is doing battle along side St. Michael the Archangel) and the sword at least is made in Germany. The things we bought are very good quality.

Just adding an alternative source for Catholic items in lieu of MIC religious items. A friend of ours has beautiful images at TLC Portraits. They are so wonderful!

Kari -- you're right. Nova Natural has gorgeous stuff ... you'll pay more for not-MIC stuff, but it's worth it in the long run both from the standpoint of safety/health and quality!

I'm just getting time to read through this thread - it's a topic weighing heavily on me right now. Thank you all for the great links - I've been bookmarking as I go.
I'm adding another I found recently in my frustrating search for products NOT MIC!!!
Hazelnut Kids
If anyone has stumbled across a clothing source that is not MIC - I'd love the links! I'm in the market for baby, kids and adults - so post whatever you've got. This is quite frustrating isn't it?!

I am at the end of my not-MIC rope! I am finding it very hard to find things that I can afford, especially things that the kids have requested. I have one that desparately wants a doll stroller, another who wants a dollhouse and another who wants a castle. If I try to get those not made in China, it will cost me hundreds of dollars!
And I am under the deadline of getting my shopping done before this little guy arrives.

Molly, you're right. It's terribly hard. Sometimes it is impossible (as in the case of the Irish step dance competition wig I had to buy for dd, or shower curtain liners). Toys are definitely a problem.
I don't have any good answers, sadly...toys are the hardest thing, and sometimes you just don't have affordable alternatives available.

This is not a perfect solution, but buying used is a step away from the problem it seems to me.
At least your money is going to a person (ebay) or thrift shop (often charitable) rather to some huge conglomerate corporation.
Maybe that is the way to go as an in-between step?
just a thought

We do some of this...sometimes it's hard to find what we like, but I especially use this approach for buying things like baskets...nearly all MIC.

Thank you for all the hard work you all put into this thread. What a gaggle of good sites to drool over! I sat here for ... oh, about an hour just scanning your posts, fattening my favorites gift folder, and thinking about ever so many things about which I'd off-and-on felt guilty. This is not just banning WalMart from our shopping diet, this is an epidemic! We can only do our best to be good citizens.
To reply to a couple of posts that I realize were made months ago:
First, one of you mentioned Crocs. Crocs that can sport the name CROCS are made in Canada. We can find them here in the U.S.
Someone else mentioned Schleich. Unfortunately, the animals we have say MIC.

Some Crocs in our area (the drab colors) are from Canada. The cute colors are MIC.
I was at Costco Saturday (dangerous, on many fronts) and saw two Bundt-style cake pans made in the USA. One was called a "Bavarian" cake pan; I forget the other. Prices were reasonable. Good gift idea for a kitchen shower or for an avid baker, maybe?
Also, some of Target's holiday dresses for girls (like the black velour shrug with faux animal collar) are made in the Philippines and are pretty affordable. (Especially when your dd found her own not MIC Christmas dress in a thrift shop this year! Lucky me!)

Someone here mentioned that toys were going to be the hardest item to find. I just saw that Fat Brain Toys has link on their left hand side bar for Toys Made in the USA. Over 300 items on that list!

I've compiled a list of *good* toy sites, including those listed on this discussion and some I've researched as well as the articles you listed here. It was interesting to peruse this 5 page tome, but I hope what I've done makes it easier for someone to *shop*.
God bless,

Suzanne, I ordered and received three pair of ladies tights from Hanna Andersson and all three were MIC
edited to add....I just tried a pair of these on and they're going back tomorrow....they are cut low rise and fit like bikini panties. They are made very well - look quite nice - but I don't think I could get used to the fit...

Whaaat????!!!##$$@!!!! Low rise tights? Who in the world thinks of these things? That's crazy. Low rise tights. I guess so you can't see them under your low rise skirts worn oh-so-fashionabley with your your way-too-short-and-tight shirts .

I'm not sure if this is helpful, but I did manage to find some non MIC toys at IKEA. I purchased this wooden train set from Ikea recently and it was made in Sweden. Other parts to the set were made in Bulgaria. I also bought everyday glasses (for me!)that were reasonably priced and made in Italy.
Hope that helps!

Suzanne,
I'm not sure who thinks these things up...regarding the low-rise tights...I guess it's to be able to wear a low-rise skirt or pants over them and not see the high waisted tights when one stretches their arms up and their too-short shirt shows their belly area???
The small and medium sizes are cut low-rise - the large size is the regular waisted cut.
I'm going to look for more my style at Target next week.

Oh Marilyn, this IS sad. I admired those nightgowns from afar. I never could bring myself to buy one. I just e-mailed Bean. I'm going to set up a list of clothing sites who either have a no-China policy or who will be open as to country-of-origin, just like I set up the toy store list. I found some lovely, but $$$ fair trade sites. But if we remember about buying/having less, and buying maybe more classic items that match with everything ... ?
