Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Also, on I-Tunes, there is a Liturgy of the Hours Morning Prayer podcast that you can subscribe to (for free) and each day when you open up your I-tunes, it will download that days... it is rather nice, a group of people reciting the psalms, even a song.

Sorry to sound so untechnical - but I do not know what a podcast is. Do I need a MAC and/or IPOD - or can I listen on a regular computer?

Thanks everyone for such great information. I have been praying about a way for my husband and I to pray together in the morning and evening - we do pray with the kids - but not just us - and I have been trying to find out about the Liturgy of the Hours. I just have to try and decide whether the get Christian Prayer of the Shorter Christian Prayer.

Hi Marilyn,

I just thought I'd clear up any confusion about Shorter Christian prayer. (Even though I left mine at church Friday and may no longer own one ).

It has Morning, Evening and Night prayer, as someone mentioned. Morning prayer includes the Invitatory Psalm with Antiphon, Hymn, 3 Psalms and/or Canticles (Psalmody?) proper to the day, Reading, Responsory, Gospel Canticle with Antiphon proper to the day, Intercessions and Closing Prayer. There is an Office for the Dead and the Saturday Office of the Blessed Virgin. The parts you have to flip around for are the Proper Antiphons and Concluding prayers for Sundays, Saints' feasts and Liturgical seasons. There is a little more flipping around during Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter because there are more prayers proper to those seasons. But with ribbons it isn't too bad, but not having tried the 4-volume set I haven't known anything else. My Franciscan friends had an old set to give away and if I don't find my book today I may take it.

BTW, a friend of mine took a small piece of plastic canvas for embroidery and made a great little set of ribbons with it.

Just to add one more option to the mix which you are considering: The Little Office of the BVM.

I especially recommend it for use in tandem with the Shorter Christian Prayer edition in May and October.

It has really worked for me, though right now I am alternating between Christian Prayer and the full 4-vol LOTH.

In case this is important, as Franciscan Tertiaries we're required to pray Morning and Evening prayer. We are allowed to substitute the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary. However, Shorter Christian Prayer does not fulfill our obligation. (I'm not exactly sure why especially after Gwen's description of it.)

I prayed the Little Office for about a year. I found the one week cycle very manageable.

I read this thread a few days ago, then yesterday came across these lines in St. Josemaria Escriva's "The Way"

#86 Your prayer ought to be liturgical. Would that you were given to reciting the psalms and prayers of the missal instead of private or special prayers!

I did a post on the way we pray the Liturgy of the Hours with the kids at morning prayer. Hope you find it helpful.
