That sounds great, and let's just say I let my hand recover over the weekend I am SO liking how they are turning out, they are beautiful and I can't emphasize enough how detailed and well thought out the whole program is, it's the BEST complete set I've seen yet, albeit labor intensive initially!

Meredith, sorry, this probably is not in the right thread feel free to move it), but I have just joined Karen's class (after much deliberating over whether to join or not), and am considering purchasing the pink/blue/green kits. How much work is involved in making the kits? And did you say you were cutting out 192 felt letters???

I was a bit overwhelmed by the amount of cutting, pasting onto cardstock, laminating, and then cutting again, so my thought was to print the kit straight onto the pink (or blue or green) cardstock and then laminate and cut out. No coloring in or cutting things twice. Karen seemed to think that will work out great. What would be your thoughts?

The kits do seem very comprehensive, so I'm seriously thinking about buying - at least one ATM.

No. That would take too long and I just don't have the time or the patience (really, that's the reason--coloring is not a favorite activity of mine). I think the black line pictures will be fine.

Hi Kirstin

I've just joined the class (yes, very late), and I had asked Karen if it's OK not to colour the pic/s in, and also if the cards could just be printed onto the right colour cardstock. Her reply was an absolute yes - that is a relief to me, which should save on heaps of work I hope.

I do love crafty things like colouring in, but with I just simply do not have the time at the moment.

I had wondered the same thing. I saw your question on the group site, but I did not see the answer--so I'm glad to hear that it's no problem to print onto colored cardstock.

However, I already printed the pink series onto regular copy paper and have been experimenting with colored pencil, watercolor, and watercolor pencils. I like the watercolor, but ya, it is taking super long! So, I'm reconsidering what I should do. Should I reprint them all onto cardstock, or just keep on painting!

I had the hardest time with printing bc I can't get the margins correct. Even when I set them all to zero, some of the pictures run off the page. I still can't get the books to line up properly, and a couple of the pictures are still cut off even though the image shifts down. That has made the printing a nightmare for me.

I have not purchased the kit yet - just asking questions first - but I wonder if anyone else is having problems printing it? Maybe you could ask Karen.

Do let us know how you go.

Just thought - have you tried scaling your pages to fit - often there is a button to do that - something like 'shrink to fit page' or similar?

In the past I have tried printing pages at 70% or so to fit everything in the margins. That might work for you.

With a few exceptions, I've been able to fix the problem. Karen was willing to help and even said she could email me the files separately-which would take alot of time on her part. I haven't tried that yet.

Karen said that she wasn't aware of anyone else having these problems, and that it is therefore probably my printer settings. I have a HP Laserjet 1012. I thought it might also have something to do with a few specific images or with the printing from a web page. I saved to my computer, but still had the problem.

I have tried changing the margins in page setup. Karen suggested setting to zero which probably worked the best for the sound classification files. There are still a couple of pictures that are slightly cut off such as the vacuum handle, and the carrot top on the vegetables. It also throws off the measurements for cutting according to her diagram, which is not that big of a deal to me. So my question is if those specific pictures are that way on other peoples print outs?

My printer still reads:
Margins of section 2 are set outside the printable area of the page, continue? yes. no.
or
1 or more margins are set outside the printable area of the page, choose Fix, or Ignore.

I've tried adjusting the margins for the books, and it creates problems with the layout so that it doesn't work when the page is folded. Same with resizing it. It shifts it off center. The picture I've been working on is the M the picture of the milipede. The rock is cut off at the margin. But maybe that is just how the picture is. Is anyone elses like mine?

Sometimes I get that message about margins also, and just ignore it, and everything prints fine. I guess you've already tried hitting the "continue yes" just to see what happens without adjusting anything?

I haven't had time to print any yet, so I don't know if I"d have problems. As far as coloring, I don't know. I might have my dc help me but I cannot imagine having enough time to do it all myself, though I think my dc would like the color.

I decided to color ours and make color copies (rather than color in multiple sets). It is going to take a lot of time to do but I truly do enjoy it coloring. My sister helped me yesterday with some of the coloring and with mounting pictures onto posterboard squares. Having help makes a big difference but it is still a very sizable project. I must admit that while I really do like how the pictures are turning out, I'm not sure it's going to be worth it!

I like the idea of water colors / water color pencils. I bet they would look beautiful done that way!

I have just been looking at Part 5 of language from Karen's class, and I have to say my head is spinning. Is it easier to put it all together if you purchase her kit?

No problem JoJo, I moved you, and it's really a personal preference on the coloring. Karen makes it very clear that it's really up to you and what you prefer! I just happened to have some very willing coloring volunteers so that's what we did, but personally, I think the black drawings are great as is!!

Enjoy the class and have fun putting it all together!
Blessings!

There is quite a bit of work involved in making the kits, even if you leave the pictures black and white. I don't know how many felt letters need to be cut out but I started in on this the other night. It actually was kind of fun and went more quickly than I thought it would! I still think you could find some pre-cut, adhesive backed felt letters that would work. You might look online for some --- I couldn't find any in the right "font" at Micheal's or Hobby Lobby.

This is the problem I had too Kristin, hence the mad cutting I am so happy with the finished product however, that I am glad I went with her font and the black sticky-back felt, it wasn't so bad all said and done! What are ya'll using for your "bins"???

I still haven't decided what to use for the "bins". I do have some wooden boxes that I may end up using. I noticed the nice wooden boxes you used --- Where did you get them???

Well, those are from the five and dime near me and they are not anywhere else I've ever seen I actually won't "store" my sound materials in them as I can't stack 25 of them together without crushing everything. So I opted for sliding each sound content into a page protector and filing them into a large retangular basket which fits great on my storage shelf. When I introduce a sound, I'll have it in one of the wood divided boxes and then my ds will have access to it that way. It's not ideal, but it will be funtional from the get-go!!

Anyone else want to share what's working for them??

Thank you for your recommendation Meredith. I've bought the pink kit and have had a look at what I'll need to do for now, and I think it's very manageable. In fact, putting this sort of kit together on your own (like trying to find pictures for each sound off the net or graphics CD-Roms) would be a much, much bigger undertaking. Karen' kit has made things so much easier.

Now I just have to find a quick and easy way to make sandpaper letters.

You're welcome Jo, and I have been pretty happy with my "glitter" chipboard ones from Michaels and some cardboard, although they are not authentic. I saw some beautiful ones at Montessori by Hand Flickr Share Pool. They are down towards the bottom and she did them very nicely with tan sticky-back felt. Just another option
