Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

What are some of the best telephone greetings you've heard? (Keeping in mind that kids shouldn't share too much info these days and shouldn't engage in converstaions with strangers without a parent's approval, right?)

I'm not ready to let my kids answer the phone yet, but I would like for them to start practicing with dh when his name appears on the caller id. My mom and my sister and I were disagreeing on how phones should be answered by kids, so I thought I'd ask what you all think.

How do you have your kids answer the phone in this day and age?

Thank you!

Honestly, unless it's DH, they don't answer the phone.

Before caller ID, I only let them answer, "Hello, who's calling please?"

I'd had too many weird phone calls to give out ANY info, and this let my dc know right away if it was someone they could talk to, or not.

Leone residence, (child's first name) speaking.

Same way I grew up answering the phone.

We do the 'last name... residence' thing too. But dh and I use our cell phones as primary numbers-- did away with the land-line in Jan., so pretty much the only folks who call us know us and have been personally given our numbers.

Oh good. I thought I was the last person on earth who didn't let her kids answer the phone.

I like the idea of practicing on dad.

I also like the the "Last name residence. Who's is calling please?"

What do you do if the person calling doesn't answer though? You know, they hear a kid voice and instantly ask for mom or something? Or worse, my peeve of starting a conversation with the kid? (Oh hi there, I'm blank, who are you, what are you doing home on a school day....)

my kids are taught to just hang up. and that works pretty good. if hte person on the line won't tell them who they are, then they don't talk to us. and my kids know not to give out their info...

Since we have caller i.d., the kids are only supposed to answer if we know who is calling, and only the two oldest are allowed to answer. They answer, "Hello,(lastname) residence, this is (first name) speaking." We just started letting them answer the phone this past year. They are not suuposed to answer if the caller i.d. says "unknown...blocked call," or a name that is not a close friend or relative.

Dh does NOT want us giving out our last name when we answer the phone--he feels it gives out too much info. So I have oldest dd (turned 7 in March) say "Hello..may I ask who is calling?...Let me get my mommy"

I have to have her answer the phone sometimes, simply because I am the only adult here, and sometimes I just cannot answer the phone (and since DH *can* call us, its better for us to go ahead and answer it, esp as don't have caller ID).

Our phones play different ringtones for different family members and close friends. The kids are only to answer if it is playing a song.

I am a big fan of caller id and answering machines!

One thing I like is when older children in a family identify themselves (provided they have caller id and know it is a friend calling). It is hard when I call a house that is full of teenagers and can't tell if I have a parent or child on the line. And I always seem to guess wrong!

Mine answer, "Hello, K--- residence, how can I help you?"

Most people ask right away to speak to me or dh.

If they talk too much, my ds interrupts and says, "um...let me get my mom." LOL!

We say:
"G----- Residence, may I help you?"

We only let dd-6 answer the phone right now, and only when we know who it is from the answering machine that screens our calls.

dd-5 and dd-3.5 practice, though

Wonderful answers, ladies! Thank you for settling my doubts (and for siding with me in the disagreement I had with my sis over this, even though you didn't know you were!! )

I just knew I could count on you all for wisdom!

My kids were traine to answer the phone "last name Residence, who's calling please?" but rarely put it into practice because we mostly use our cell phones and they know who it is before they answer...which is wy I got a good chuckle the other day when my 6yo obediently picked up the phone and stated "Last name Presidents, who is this please?"
