I've done the bucket thing, Mrs. K and it worked great.
Build a ramp for the mouse to run up and then it'll drop down into the bucket to eat and cannot get out. We used a similar idea to trap turtles in ponds but positioned the ramp teeter-totter style so it was balanced just right so that when the turtle climbed out on the end to sun itself - ploop! - into the bucket it would go! We added a bit of a weight to the outside end so it reset itself.

I am not trying to be critical or sarcastic, this is a sincere question. Why are you all trying to safe a mouses life?

You sound like the men in my house!
I am not sure what my answer is, I guess I just don't see a reason to kill an animal if there is an alternative. I would rather deliver him safely to the woods where he can be lunch for a snake.
Okay, you got me. No good answer.

molly, i thought that was a good answer! because my kids think it's cruel to kill the mice. because it's not hard to relocate them. because they provide a chance to draw mice for nature study. now, don't ask me what happened to the groundhog that lived under our sunroom, okay?

Back in Iowa, all the farm wives use a special poison that (sorry this is gross)dissolves the isides of the mouse and therefore--no smell. We used it, too, when we had (this is even gross-er) rats in the garage and under the bathroom in the crawl space. Threw litle packets all over under the crawl space, and soon, no rats. However, we also had NO little people or pets in that area, so it was safe. I'll find out the name of the stuff if you want me to. I had to leave our bucket of it since the movers wouldn't move it. Thankfully, we haven't needed it here!

I agree with Chicken Lady! If there is something in my house that could cause any harm to my kids, the "Mother Hen" in me kicks in and I GET RID OF IT!
My question to all you that let the mouse go free: don't you think the mouse will come back? If it had an entrance into your home and they had food to eat, it is warm/cool, do you think they will come back? They may not necessarily be eaten by another animal. I am not a farm girl, by ANY stretch of the imagination, so I am curious as to what you think.

Well, I would take it REALLY far into the woods!
Dh forgot the traps and is now out of town until tomorrow night. Maybe I can convince some teenager to pick one up on his way home.
