Has anyone set-up their 6-9 Grammar area yet?? Or at least compiled all the Grammar Symbols and Boxes? Are you color-coding this area as well as mentioned in Lori's Organizing Post.

Would love to hear how you all are approaching Grammar with this age range. I'm pretty well set for my 3-6 kiddos, but struggling a bit for my 6-9!

Blessings!

Meredith,
I purchased a set of wooden grammar symbols for use with my 6yo from KidAdvance. I also plan on using a lot of the grammar cards from Montessori Materials particularly for parts of speech practice. I am also planning to purchase this farm from Amazon to round out the grammar center. We will be using Grammar Songs and if I can swing it at some point - I want Lori's Pink, Blue, Green series for my 6yo!!!!

I'm excited about using the grammar materials with my 6yo. My 10yo will be involved in a lot of the presentations to help fill in a lot of gaps she has from workbook amnesia!

Oh - forgot to say that I want to look into the color coding after I get back on my feet. I loved the way the bins set everything apart. I'm not sure yet about how the practical details will work out in terms of the amount of space I have. If I can swing it though, I'm going to try to do something similar at least. I just happen to have a set of primary color bins that I'm already using to a certain extent, I'm going to go through and make sure I have the right colors in the right areas. All I would need to add are the small bins to contain the different language cards.

I hope to add some booklets to this area as well - I'd like the kids to make some parts of speech booklets - all in a sunny yellow perhaps?

I have a set of wooden grammar symbols, and I just ordered Language Manuals 1-4 from Montessori R&D today. Estimated delivery date is July 17. I'll let you know what I think of them when they come in. I'm planning on using them as guides for both my 10 yo and 8 yo.

Thanks ladies, looks good. I will be interested in how you like the R & D Manuals. I've thought about ordering from them, but am leary as there are no photos, at least that I can tell. But for Language, perhaps that is a non-issue.

I think the Grammar Solids would be a good idea, don't know why I didn't just order them in the first place

Blessings!

Oh and I forgot to mention that I'll be adding to our Little People Farm that I've had since my dd was 1! We still have all the pieces believe it or not and I have MANY tractors, extra fencing, Playmobil farm accessories that should accompany it just fine! I also really like all the Language Materials at JMJPublishing. She has the cutest Farm Tackle Boxes!

Oh that's right - JMJ Publishing! I have bookmarked them in my Montessori language folder - they are quite inspiring in the area of language! Did you see their GIGANTIC farm?

Angela or Meredith-
What is the draw with the R & D manuals? Are they the cadillac of presentations? Are you paying for several levels of presentations in the language area? Their website isn't exactly overflowing in information.

You know I'm waiting to hear about these as well, I don't have any of these ones, just freebies from online so far and the beginnings of our class with Karen Do tell, Angela

I was thinking that our manuals/albums from Karen were like the "R&D Manuals." ???

Meredith, like you I'm not sure about the lack of photos in the R&D manuals (I really benefit from visuals!). Without them I sometimes find myself reading and re-reading the same set of instructions until I'm sometimes thoroughly confused. They really are such a helpful reference.

Do you have other manuals that do have pictures? I think the NAMC ones do, but they're waaaaayyyyyyy out of my price range. Do Karen Tyler's albums have pictures? I'm going to be taking her elementary class this fall and that would be a big help to me.

So far she has uploaded several nice photos from her own albums/classes at work doing the Practical Life actitivies, much like a personal photo album. That's as far as we've gotten so far!

Suzanne, I'm under the impression that the R & D Manuals are much more detailed, but I can't compare them...Angela...?

I am going to make up a set of the grammar boxes from Montessori materials as soon as I get a chance. I really like that set. I will also get the flat wooden grammar symbols rather than the solids($$$). Ds knows his basic grammar pretty well, so it will only be a review for him, but it will work for dd when she is ready.

Theresa, what are the flat wooden ones??? I haven't seen these anywhere, or maybe didn't look specifically for them and didn't know they were there

The flat wooden ones are here:grammar symbols
Now that I look at them again (it's been awhile) they are actually more expensive than the solids. I think the reason I had them on my list is that there were multiple copies for doing the sentences and I like that more than using the paper symbols. But now I see at Alisons the solids are very reasonably priced.
Maybe for Christmas I will get them all, if I am a very good girl!
Fantastic idea, about the sculpey, Donna Marie!

I have the flat grammar symbols, not the solids. I figured I could make the solids (but haven't yet), but the box of flat symbols comes with a lot. I got mine from Montessori Outlet.

As far as the R&D manuals go... I'm only using online and Karen's stuff for primary (3-6), but I finding stuff for elementary has been a little harder. If you check out the tables of contents, you can see that they're pretty detailed. They also go further than the NAMC manuals, into the 9-12 range. And they're cheaper than the NAMC manuals. I compared both before I decided, but the NAMC manuals -- while they contain wonderful visuals -- seem kind of light on content, especially for their price. I have also heard that the NAMC manuals contain some factual errors. (Meredith, like you I have been leery of ordering anything without photos, so I've put this off for a while.)

Celeste gave me a good comparison of the two here on the boards... I'll have to go find the thread. I do know that many people on the playschool6 list use the R&D manuals.

Here's the thread comparing NAMC to R&D.

The grammar solids are for introducing the parts of speach (there are neat stories for each one!), the flat symbols are for actually labelng the parts of speach in sentence strips (or cards).
I am planning to buy the grammar solids and possibly the R & D manuals that Angela purchased- Angela, I'm eager to hear how you like them! I might just wait and get albums through Karen's elementary class (particularly since I have NO budget left ), and I am also looking into Montessori of the Earth training.
I have printed a bunch from montessorimaterials and JMJ publishing and keep it in a tackle box. I have a playmobil farm also in a tackle box. I made the flat grammar shapes by printing from JMJ publishing, laminating and sticking to sticky-back fun foam, then cutting out, and I keep those in a small tackle box too!

And from what I have seen of R&D they are similar to Karen's, but they go up to age 12, where Karen only offers 3-6 currently. That is why R&D are so popular they are really the only affordable source for elementary manuals- until Karen starts offering some!

Is the doing an elementary class? I emailed Karen a couple of weeks ago, but did not hear back. I could not find any info about elementary on her site - did I overlook it somewhere?

I would be very interested in this class.

Yes, there is plenty of info about 3-6, but once they hit 6, it gets scarce, doesn't it.

Thank you Andrea, I knew the differentiation for the two, I just needed a refresher and I love that you made your flat ones with the sticky back foam, great idea for my older kids to help out with

Donna Marie, can we just all come and have school at your house, it sounds so fun, I just LOVE your attitude, which reminds me to go and pick up some sculpey too

Angela, thanks for that link again to the discussion, I do believe the R & D are going to be good. We'll be anxiously awaiting your review, or anyone else who has them!!
Blessings!
