Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Over the last two years I've learned the location of about 7 thrift stores in our area. A couple of them are within 10 minutes drive, others are in the suburbs.    In recent months I stopped bringing the children but previously always had them in tow! I would usually make a quick stop whenever errands brought me into the vicinity of a thrift store but I've stopped going to thrift stores for the time being --- we've run out of space and the children have had quite enough of it!

Okay, I just had to share my exciting inexpensive buys this week: "Montessori in the Home, The School Years" A$9 (Yippee! I had just been looking on Amazon & expecting to pay much more to have an old copy shipped internationally) & "The Montessori Revolution in Education" - same price, same store - a little 2nd hand bookstore in town. Both totally oldschool original copies, musty-dusty, but very exciting!

And then, today I bought 4 old wonderful picture books for $1 each : Baby animals, Australian Wildlife, Insects, and Spiders (very timely as we had a Wolf Spider in the sandpit yesterday, crawling on my littlest one's pant leg! We caught it in a jar to study before releasing in a local paddock. Then, quickly printed & made up the Spider cards from Theresa's Yahoo Group - Thanks again Theresa! - how cool to have things ready to go when opportunity knocks!)

I love thrift shopping too. Lets keep this thread going!

Hmmm, Well, according to my research - they're okay! But, maybe that's just Australian Wolf Spiders. Maybe there are more?! Eeeek.

I just found this link that does indicate wolf spiders in US are poisonous, but not lethal. I'm glad that in your neck of the woods they're a-okay!

I don't know about wolf spiders in Australia (everything there seems deadly to me!LOL) but wolf spiders here in the US are harmless. That link was wrong (think about it, it is a pest control site. Of course they want you to be afraid of spiders!).
I did my research on wolf spiders in grad school, so this happens to be something I know about. The smaller ones cannot puncture human skin, and the larger ones, their bite is about like a pin prick. With some folks there may be some localized swelling due to sensitivity to the venom. I've been bitten by some fairly large ones and it hurts a bit, but I never reacted to the bite at all.
Here is the thing. All spiders are venomous. Most of them, however, lack the ability (due to size) to bite a human. Of those that can, very few have a venom which is toxic enough, or in large enough volume, to be considered harmful. A few are harmful or even deadly (ex: black widow, brown recluse, and a few others).
So, if someone asks is a spider venomous, the answer will always be yes. Are they harmful? Likely no.

As a woman over 40, I got a kick out of that site's description of the orb-weaving spider, should one accidentally walk into a web at night: "the fright of this spider crawling over one's face can be terrifying and may cause a heart attack, particularly to the susceptible over 40 year olds." Yeah.

You know what almost gave me a heart attack? My 4 yo sneaking up on me in the drugstore the other day and zapping me on the back with one of those "massagers". I actually screamed. How embarrassing.

A couple of years ago, my husband and I were watching a movie at home, and there was something resembling a ball of hair moving across the carpet. It must have even had a shadow. BIG spider!

What a great thing to know about. I'd like to be more knowledgeable about the ones around here.   I guess I have some reading up to do. I like to find good deals on books at library book sales. We always come home with bags full.

I can't tell you how much I am enjoying this thread--between the bargains and the spiders, you moms have given me a great deal to think and laugh about here!

Thank you!

I can't believe I forgot to post about this earlier, but we even hit up a garage sale this weekend, and I found two brand new inkjet refill kits for 50 cents each! I'm a cartridge refiller, and I was thrilled to find these!   Well, that and a leather purse for $1 that was just like the one I had been eyeing at T.J. Maxx...
