I went through clothes this year and did some damage :), filling up 3 baskets of clothes for the resale shop.
However, I find that if I get rid of too much, I end up having to shop for clothes. Having 2 preteen girls makes this task uninviting
So I tend to save the 12 year old's clothes that are in good shape for the 10, 7, and 4 year old.
Laundry is constant, but what would I expect really with 10 people in the house? I have paired down to 2 dresses for church for the girls, but that's still 8 dresses...well, 16 really since I have 2 for spring/summer, and two for fall/winter. 16!!! That sounds ridiculous!! But having 4 dresses per child doesn't sound so huge. It's those expedential numbers that get you!
This laundry situation will never be tamed, as such, until sadly, the children are no longer children. Then I won't need a maternity clothes box anymore
Oh...that one will be hard to part with. And the box of baby clothes
Blessings,
Stephanie

Years ago, a friend told my mom "Ten-year olds can operate a video game player, a computer, program the VCR, microwave a snack and so on--they're more than old enough to operate the washer and dryer safely."
Some of us were older than ten already, and mom bought us our own laundry baskets and assigned us 'laundry days.' We also did our own sheets. This didn't take away all the work for her but it sure helped!
I only have three children, but they all do their own laundry, even the nine-year-old (I supervise when she's turning on the washer etc.). Not only does this help the laundry situation, it also ends the "clean or slightly worn clothes in the hamper" phenomenon very quickly!

OK I have one of those boxes too! But I was looking through it and I must confess the clothes I wore when I was pregnant with my first 3 are just ugly! I mean what is with the large flowers and peter pan collars on a 6', 9 month pregnant woman! Can we just say sofa material I am wanting to save some (just in case) but come on, some of this is just bad and wrong

Back to Chicken Lady's original post...what would the Ingall's do? I too love the idea of those little blue dresses the girls wore EVERY Sunday. Unfortunately I still have too many clothes left over from my single days to comply(married only 7.5 years now), but my three boys pretty much wear their same two or so Sunday outfits every week.
But seriously, do I not do enough laundry? I probably do 1, sometimes 2, loads of each white, dark and color, each week. We try to be minimalist too and the kids are small (6, 4 and 2 yr) so the clothes are small too. Also, I admit I do let the kids wear their clothes again even if they are a little dirty (again I do think back to the pioneer days) especially if we are not going anywhere special.
Still this is a change from doing laundry once every 2 weeks when it was just hubby and me...yes we had 2 weeks worth of underwear for just that reason!

Yeah! No kidding! The kids usually outwear their clothes before they look so dated. I usually keep a few items, enough in a small box and then add what I need when I am expecting. I learning to do the same for the kids. Save a few things, but not everything. This is cutting my boxes way down and I am left with something to build the next kid's wardrobe on. The real problem are those not so great clothes with stains, unrepairable holes, etc....no where nice enough for resale shop or even give-aways. So do I stash those away or pitch them. I hate pitching clothes, but then again I don't want the kid's looking like rag-pickers when we are out and about. So I am succumbing to truly making them rags
Blessings,
Stephanie

This is SO what I'm gonna do! Already I feel like I'm doing laundry ALL week and there is only 3 of us! My husband is a construction worker and dirties two shirts per day in summer and my dd is in cloth diapers . . .
Red Cardigan, my mom made all us 9 kids do our own laundry too! My nine year old sister has been doing laundry for a year or two. My 5yo brother is heading for initiation soon. We each had a "day" -- even my dad! (who does mom's and his together) My 3 little bros shared a day and mine was Friday! If you didn't get your wash done on your day the next person coming along could kick your stuff out of the laundry room. So, the only laundry that my mom really does is the 5yo's, the kitchen/house laundry and helps with hers and dads. She thinks it's great!
I hope I have lots of kids!
