I am going through a prolonged spiritual crisis of varying intensity--I feel very desperate for help on things like self-discipline, faithfulness, and marital harmony. Prayer is very dry right now. I don't pray often enough and I hardly even trust it when I do. I have wanted to seek counseling and/or spiritual direction for years but dh is opposed to it at this stage--even if I were to disregard that (not smart) it would be a tough act to pull off logistically.
I'm sorry for the drama. Please pray for me, and if you have any words of advice on how to discern God's will when I don't trust my own judgment, I'm listening for that too.

I can understand your dh's reluctance to counseling. There is usually significant money and time involved. But there must be a way to seek spiritual direction without causing a disturbance in the family. Do you have a trusted priest that you could meet with regularly? If not, how about an older woman who can mentor you? I have gotten so much help over the years from other Catholic women who were farther along spiritually than I.
God bless you.

I will be praying for you as you listen to the Holy Spirit. Sometimes it is very, very hard to find time and resources for the things you need help with. You're not being dramatic, believe me. You're seeking truths to apply to your own life.
Please remember that many of our greatest saints, including St. Teresa of Avila and Mother Teresa (saint-to-be) experienced long periods (years) of spiritual dryness, during which they couldn't feel God's influence in their lives at all. Keep praying and trying, in spite of your emptiness, please. You may have future glories waiting as your reward, truly!

Are you anywhere near Opus Dei priests or priests from the Legionaires of Christ?
Priests from both Opus Dei and the Legionaires are EXCELLENT at spiritual direction and confession - never forget the power of a good confession.
You have my prayers, friend...

Here's a thread on spiritual dryness. I hope there's something there to rehydrate you. I'm praying too.

I'll pray. The Discernment of Spirits: An Ignatian Guide to Everyday Living is really helpful when you can't get to a spiritual director. But as Maria mentioned, frequent Confession is sooooo helpful.

Praying for you.
Sometimes at times like this it can be good to set aside longer, more formal prayer in favor of a short prayer we can say well--the Memorare is nice because we can turn to Mary in our hearts, ask her help with our intercessions, and then offer the prayer.
Another thing is to create a small habit of prayer. Years ago, my children were fascinated when our digital clocks would show a triple number: 1:11, 2:22, 3:33, etc., so we made up a little habit of praying a Glory Be whenever we happened to see one of those triple numbers, in honor of the Holy Trinity. Now, they'll sometimes announce to everyone, "It's 3:33" and we'll all stop what we're doing to pray for a moment.
These may seem like little things, but I think they've helped me to get through the times when I felt too "empty" to pray.

Prayers for you! I can really relate to what you are saying. I feel like I am just now climbing out of a period of spiritual dryness.
I just want to second someone's comment about confession. It is always the turning point for me. And then I have to go frequently after that!

I agree that finding a good priest for confession may be key to your getting some good spiritual direction, especially if your husband does not want you to enter a formal relationship of that sort. A confession with a priest who gives good advice is not exactly the same as spiritual direction, but it helps tremendously.
Prayers for you!
