Put a smear of petroleum jelly around the end of the line to keep the ants off.

One problem with the umbrella dryers is that if you buy an inexpensive model they can and will blow over and bend the main rod. You can help this by having a sleeve pole in the ground, but that sort of defeats the purpose of being able to take it down when not in use.
