thanks. It was a tear jerker and after I read it, I gave it back to her, but she made me keep it. Now after I've been through some real grieving myself, it's very comforting and dear to me.

I had suggested a book to Mary G. this summer and she just asked me to post it since she couldn't remember it. Sweet Promised Land is a memoir of a Basque immigrant who comes to this country to herd sheep and after 50 years finally returns to the old country to visit. It really was touching to me since my grandfather was a Basque who immigrated to this country to herd sheep in the early part of the 20th century. If you have parents or grandparents who immigrated to the US in the last century I think you'll find it speaks to the immigrant experience in a universal way. And since the Basque people are generally Catholic, there are sprinklings of faith and religion in the story.

The Prizewinner book is being made into a movie with Julianne Moore as the Mom and Woody Harrelson as the Dad. No word yet on the release date.
Interesting!

Wow...where did you hear that Marybeth? I hope they don't take out every inkling of faith; there wasn't that much in the book but it was there.

I love Taylor Caldwell as an author and read as many of her books as I could get my hands on, but I don't know if she would be classified as a Catholic author. I read that she believed that she was reincarnated and wrote about things that she claimed to have lived through in a former life. I think I saw this in an about the author blurb in one of her books, but would like to know if this is really the case as I read this so long ago and tended to believe anything in print back then. Has anyone else heard this or is it just me?
I still love her books and have looked to purchase my own copies of many, especially her novels set at the time of the early church. As I recall them, they were riveting and you did really feel like you were there - she must have done some fabulous research. These novels reminded me of some of my other favorites by Thomas B. Costain.

This IS exciting! I am so glad I let you all talk me into reading this book recently. I think I'll have to talk dh into seeing this one in the theater . . .

Anyone see the Prizewinner movie?
Just curious....
I guess Renee Zellweger is going to play Beatrix Potter in the story of her life. I am not sure when it goes into production.

It hasn't been released here yet. It was released on the coasts and in Chicago and Defiance over the weekend. Thewebsite lists these cities for Oct. 14th:
Boston, MA
Phoenix, AZ
Toronto, Canada
Dallas, TX
Atlanta, GA
San Diego, CA
Seattle, WA
Richmond, VA
Philadelphia, PA
Washington DC
Wonder why it's such a limited release?

I don't know. I did see it advertised outside several movie theatres in the past few weeks. Apparently, being here in Chicago I didn't catch the limited release.

Recently, I have been thinking about a memoir I listened to on audio about a dozen years ago. I vaguely remember enjoying it, and clearly remember laughing uproariously at certain parts. But I couldn't remember the author or title. But just tonight I finally remembered a way to find the book. A funny phrase that the author's quirky mother used to repeat came to me out of the blue. I just typed "Terwilliger bunts one" into Google . . . and viola!
It's An American Childhood by Annie Dillard. Have any of you read it?

Loved it... Great book. I admired that quirky quote so much that I hijacked it and use it myself at odd times. "Terwilliger bunts one" tends to stick, doesnt' it?
Indirectly, the book certainly makes a case for home education, too.
I have not read, "Pilgrim at Tinker's Creek" by Annie Dillard, but have heard it's an excellent living science kinda book...for adults, that is.

Interestingly, when I used Google to find that quote, I learned that the "Terwilliger bunts one" excerpt is found in Norton's Anthologies these days. High school and college students everywhere are now familiar with that quote, I guess.
And it sticks so well that I have chuckled over her mom's use of that phrase periodically over the years--without any memory of the rest of the book!

Has anyone seen Prizewinner the movie? It has never been shown here in Denver . Do you think it will come out on video nationwide?
