What do you use to hold your sorted laundry?
I have a canvas bag sorter on a cedar frame. The bags snap around the frame. My 8 yo dd's job is to bring and sort laundry everyday, and we try really hard to do two loads a day. Even so, the amount of laundry is such that if you try to cram all the laundry in the bags, they come unsnapped and laundry goes everywhere, gets mixed up, etc. I've been looking online, but it seems like even the expensive laundry sorters have the same sort of construction. (?)
Any ideas?

I have the same type of thing, but a cheap one, lol. it has mesh bags.
we only have one of the original bags, and I had to buy two new bags. the new ones are nicer and thicker and work much better. I can also fit a huge load in them. sometimes two loads...and I have a large capacity washer.
that being said....the frmae (now about 7 yrs old) comes apart easy. it is PVC piping. so there are days when, after the kids get done sorting, that I will find hte bags on the floor LOL. so I hook everything up together again.
I was thinking after the move I would buy a nice on, but if the bags are kind of small maybe I will stick with the cheapo kind....hhmmmm
is you dh a handy man? maybe he could construct a holder that is bigger aand yet sturdier than mine. and you could buy the large mesh bags from the store to put in them. ???  OOO then you could customize it with more than three bags! lol
Okay I def. haven't had my coffee yet. I am excited about laundry at 8 am! LOL

I have the same kind as Jamie, the PVC pipe like ones with mesh bags, I have two, with three mesh bags apiece. Each bag holds 2 loads of laundry. I find that it all holds up well provided we don't try to cram too much into it.

We own this sorter, which may be better for your needs. These canvas bags hook over the frame in such a way that the bag itself would have to tear to fall apart (rather than a snap giving way, if that makes any sense). And this wasn't too expensive, as they go...

how many loads does each bag hold??
I only do laundry as needed because "I love it so!" lol
so wehn a bag gets close to full or full...in it goes. somedays liek before a trip or after a trip...we do many loads...but I try to kep it small.
and then the kids fold it and put it away.

I rec'd this one for my last birthday, and I love it! It's much sturdier than what I had before. I felt guilty because it's a bit pricey, but it has made laundry a much more pleasant experience. I'm still waiting for the tool that will make it a pleasure!

Now that I am no longer using the floor I have 3 big hampers I use. A white one for whites, a dark blue one for colors, and a green one for sheets/towels. I think it is sturdier than the laundry sorter I used a few years back.

You all SORT!?!?
I don't even have the floor to use, as the laundry room is also the main bathroom...and its NOT a big one. But I grew up in a "only in a blue moon" sorting household, so I guess I've never seen the reason, unless it was one of those "gonna bleed, brand new" or delicate cycle items...
LOL
Rachel (who thinks you could probably make a bang-up one with PVC pipes/elbows, and some good grommets and hooks to hang the bags on--esp if you use canvas rather than mesh)

I sort becuase it makes laundry time go faster and it is less work for me. lol
all my kids know how to sort and they are supposed to sort their clothes as they take it to the laundry room.
I remember laundry day growing up. huge pile of clothes and my mom out there sorting... for ever lol I have more important things to do, so between subjects or with their chores they do it. and the system is easy for them.

I have TWO three canvas bag sorters.
One exactly like Patty's that I too got at Lowes (but my boys like to unscrew the hooks which makes it unstable... so if you have fix-it type boys that one may not be the option for you.)
Then another -- made out of wood (3 sorter) which I got at Marshall's and has been much sturdier.
I like the three compartments because I taught my kids to put the dirty clothes away in the proper bag (similar to Theresa's system), BUT... now that we're in a two level house... moving this up and downstairs has been burdensome.
So I'm going to buy different colored laundry baskets to be sorting friendly but easier for me (or them) to carry. And I'll keep the baskets in the upstairs bathroom where I now keep the sorter (it's big enough).

I don't like the bags, b/c it annoys me to have to reach way down there to pull stuff out and it's not easy to maneuver around the room (mine has a hanging rod on the top where we hang dh's shirts to be ironed).
Plus it's too hard for my kids to pull the laundry out....they can't reach.
We use a table with 2 large laundry baskets on top and 2 large underneath. The girls can reach easily and to me, it is easier than moving a rolling cart around.
I have also used shelves for this in the past, but now with the kids doing the sorting, I can't have baskets up too high.

I collect the upstairs laundry in a basket and the downstairs laundry in another basket. Then I dump it all on the floor in the laundry room. When I sort I put darks in the washer, lights in one basket and towels in the other basket. If there are more than three loads I might leave a pile(s) on the floor or use yet another basket(s).

I realize I am very lucky to have a laundry chute leading from the upstairs bath strait to a bin in front of my washer! :)

I have the ones with PVC frame. I was so frustrated with the frames coming apart, dh finally used epoxy on them, and they are permanently assembled. They've held up for several years like this, so much so, that I had forgotten how they used to fall apart.

We bring the laundry baskets from each bedroom down to the laundry room, where there are a couple more empty baskets. Then, as I go through each of the full baskets, I throw items into their sorted location. If, for example, I'm washing darks first, I throw each dark piece,as I encounter it, into the washer, each light piece into one of the empty basket, each towel into another empty basket. I agree with Suzanne that I've found the hanging bags to be too deep and difficult to get the laundry out of; I definitely prefer the laundry baskets.

I am going through this debate at the moment and tying it in with my laundry schedule. At present most of our clothes do not need sorting by color - everything goes into a basket in my bathroom. I put the laundry on very early each morning, put it in the dryer after breakfast and then each child has different laundry days - where they take it out, sort and (for older ones) fold and put in the respective rooms.I have extra loads for towels and sheets which I usually do.
I am trying to figure out whether to put a laundry sorter in my bathroom. Or to buy different colored smaller baskets - one for the boys' room, one for the girl's and one for dh/baby/myself. They would all be responsible for carrying the baskets down the previous night - and then when laundry is dried, whoever is doing chores would sort into the respective basket and put in the correct rooms.

I never sort. It all goes in- one huge load a day....sometimes two. It gets "sorted" afterward when it is folded into each child's laundry pile. The only time I will sort laundry items out beforehand is if they are heavily soiled and should be washed alone.
