Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

The more I think about the new owners of your Mississippi house, and all the others in your predicament, the more spun-up I get. I think that it should be a 60 Minutes story or something. Your money should not be contingent on their signature!!! Please someone - think about who we can contact about this.

I totally agree. It's ridiculous! Have you contacted your congressman?

Thank you for your prayers-God does work in mysterious ways-today we found out (through the old neighborhood grapevine) that these uncooperative homeowners will be selling the house within the next six months. Once they are out of the loop we can ask the new homeowners to sign the flood insurance covenant. I just pray that the grant money is still available then!

We sold some stocks and paid off $15,000.00 of the debt. We still have a long way to go, but now have some room to breathe. I checked Miserly Moms and The Tightwad Gazette out of the library and am learning a lot.

We are staying home more and actually enjoying it! Some high quality home learning is going on!!

I did contact someone higher up at the Mississippi Development Authority (who is overseeing the grant program). They were quite honest with me-the primary reason for the grant program is to get required flood insurance covenants on properties on the coast so that the National Flood Insurance Program will foot the bill the next time. The grant awards are to help homeowners who's insurance didn't cover damage-but are mostly a way to entice people into signing the covenants. So, no legal recourse for us.

How weasely. (Is that a word?)

One funny thing...the author of Tightwad Gazette couldn't find good uses for dryer lint, but our own Lissa and some other CCM moms did (dryer lint sculptures), and Boy Scouts use dryer lint all the time to start campfires.

Having said that, I loved the TG books and really enjoyed saving money. (My mom thought I was nuts to wash out ziplock bags. I dried them on an old mitten-drying rack. Sadly, the rack rusted and I have not found a good replacement.)

Continued prayers, Jennifer, for your family...

Jennifer, We're praying here. It does help to simplify I think - there is a lot of peace in simplicity. We loved the Tightwad gazette. We also made a list of things we could do as a family for free so that when we were starting to feel really cooped up, we could just use our list. It's amazing how many really cool ideas you can come up with. Parks and historical sites, Free museum days, etc. Colorado ought to offer endless cool possibilities. Also, you might check out this cookbook from the library - Make a Mix. It really helped me get over the expensive "conveniences" from the store. You make your own baking mix, hamburger mixes, cookie mixes, etc. It allows you to buy in bulk, and you really get ahead of the cooking game too.

Many prayers!
