Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

C,
It has been my experience that the excessive hormones which cause hyperemesis peak at 10-12 weeks and begin to taper afterwards. My nauseau never really goes away until after the pregnancy is over, but functionality begins to return at around 12 weeks. Encourage your SIL, because it sounds like she's starting to come out of the fog. Time does seem to move slower when you're in the midst of the suffering - encouragement gives you something to latch onto.

I did look into milk thistle. There is a lot of compelling information about this helping with hyperemesis. I started taking it daily about a week ago. The idea is that it helps the liver to function. Those of us with hyperemesis produce exponentially more hcG hormone than others. The liver has to rid the body of excess hormone. When overloaded, we get sick, really sick. The milk thistle helps the liver to function. You should begin taking it before a pregnancy to clear the liver and get it into peak shape. It follows that you should try to eat as healthy a diet as possible in order not to stress the liver.

As usual, all this sounds really great, but it's really just a logical guess. I'll have to let you all know if it helps at all. We're praying God will bless us with another little one soon - all in His time though! Could just be another typical gut-it-out for a couple of months pregnancy - I'm prepared for that!
