I'm so excited about all these suggestions! I've got my notebook out and I'm jotting down these titles to take to the library this week. THANK YOU everyone:)

Oh, forgot to add:
The Scarlet Pimpernel is a good love story -- it used to be one of my favorites.
And if you've see the movie (with Anthony Andrews which is GOOD too!) don't be deterred. The book is kind of different and the love scenes are so sweet.
I'll think of more. Thanks for all the good suggestions!

Oh, duh! I LOVE the Scarlet Pimpernel! Personally, the older kids and I LOVE the story so much, that we could barely stand all of the movies..........I think there are three. I think the main problem is.........there are about 14(???) books total, and some of the movies are drawn from other books besides the first...........so, it SEEMS like the movies are taking liberties, when they are really just spicing it up with other details. Still, it bugged me.
Now, the musical to the music is wonderful..............we listen to it frequently, and hope someday to see it live.
My kids have read most of the other SP books..........and liked them, but said none were as good as the first.
SP is on my "read again soon" list....at the top.
So many wonderful books, so little time.

The Scarlet Pimpernel is on our reading list for the fall. We read it last year and I was just thinking about it again today. I think it is a wonderful love story. I love when he kisses the banister!
I agree about the movie...It was alright. Not anything like the book. I love the silly part about the soup. "I knew a man once who nearly died from choking on soup." The kids bring this up whenever we have soup! This was a great read aloud for the whole family!

This is WJFR's daughter... I hope you don't mind if I pop in, as you're discussing one of my favourite topics!
I mostly wanted to give a couple of suggestions in answer to Karen T's questions:
Quote:
Is there another of her books I'd like better?
I *loved* both Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights (JE more) so that type appeals to me. Any other Bronte books I should read? |
|
|
I'm also a huge fan of the Bronte books, and like them much better than Austen (though I do love Austen, too). I hadn't read anything beyond Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights until recently, but currently I'm in the midst of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte and I'm really enjoying it so far. And it's been so much fun seeing the different styles of the sisters.
And for Austen, you might want to try Northranger Abbey. It's my absolute favourite of Austen's book... clever and witty beyond belief, and it also makes a bit of fun of the Gothic novels that were so popular.
A couple others...
Thomas Hardy is an author I recently 'met.' I've read his Mayor of Casterbridge, which was tragic but romantic in a way. It's the only one I've read so far, but a couple months ago I saw the BBC adaption of Under the Greenwood Tree and it's simply darling. I can't wait to read the book.
Though not definitely not up to the caliber of Austen or the Brontes, Grace Livingston Hill's books are excellent for some lighter reading... sweet, old-fashioned, and romantic.
Again, I hope you don't mind me stopping by.

My dear Clare......you are ALWAYS welcome in our "Book Club"......always.
Anne had me write "Mayor of Casterbridge" last night.........and then changed her mind ........said it might be too tragic....
I am glad you came and offered it up to us.
The REAL tragedy: that my dd and her dear friend have out-read me, classic-ally speaking
Glad you came by, please stay here with us!

Hi,
How about Willa Cather? I really enjoyed My Antonia. Her O'Pioneers I read in one night, although it is not quite the kind of love story you might want...My Antonia is wonderful though.

Karen, I just finished rereading Mansfield Park last night, and it brought to mind your question--I thought I might suggest it to you. It is probably Austen's least popular book, but it has a bit more of a Jane Eyre-ish feel, I think. It's very different from her other work.
And I just wanted to thank everyone for the suggestions. My husband and I rented North and South a few weekend ago and we both loved it! We've got several others from the list on the way!

I'm getting in so late on this thread.
Who the heck is Mr. Thorton?
And were Anne Bronte's books mentioned already? She's an amazing and highly underrated sister of Emily and Charlotte. She wrote "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" and "Agnes Grey." I really loved "The Tenant" and it has serious Christian themes in it, far more developed than her sisters' Gothic stuff.

Mr. Thornton is the romantic lead in North and South.
Which, incidently, I watched and read because of this thread.
Definitely a great pick! He certainly gives Mr. Darcy a run, imo
