Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm #55.

It's interesting isn't it. If you click on some of the early registrants and even those more recent with only a few (or no) posts there are a lot that have not visited the forums for quite awhile. Some just registered and visited for a few days. It's interesting. Also I noticed at least a couple people that are registered under two different email addresses (like they originally registered then changed address but didn't unregister old address). All this does indicate that the numbers of total registrants are off from the real number of visitor/participants. It would be interesting to know what that number is. And like Molly, I wonder why many of those who register don't stick around - to me this is such a fun place to be and to learn and share. But I have real life friends who have come here and never gotten involved. I guess it just resonates with some people more than others.

Well, if you sort the list by number of posts (I'm in the top 10! WooHoo!) there are about 10 pages of members with over 50 posts. So, about 250 members posting regularly?

And we've determined that Colorado is one of the top posting states. There are 3 of us in the top 15. Though if you go by sheer number of total posts Virginia has it with just two folks in the top 15 (Elizabeth and Jenn).

I'm one of those listed twice. I had an email/username change but apparently the old one is still there. If I counted right, I registered around 191 with the old name.

I have a lot of hs friends who just aren't into the hs community on the net. They can't imagine spending time reading/posting. I can't imagine NOT! I just don't know how I would know about any curriculum or new things on the market without the internet. And so very few hsers in my area hs for high school that I'd feel positively isolated without the internet hs world. Its a vital part of the experience of hsing, for me.

I guess, to each their own!

I didn't have to do any math at all . I'm just behind Janette and Tim. It is interesting about people who register and never post. Since you don't have to be registered to "just read," I'm not sure how to explain it. I can explain MHamberger, listed on the first page among all those folks who became moderators. That's my friend Megan. At the time, Tim and I were looking for someone to "test drive" the boards. Megan was thinking about homeschooling and was completely new to message boards. She was a guinea pig. She ended up putting her children in school, so she rarely pops in here.

Books, I have trouble remembering what it was like to homeschool without the 'net. And in the "small world" category: my first internet-ready computer was sold to me by Rick Smith. He came to my house and installed it in 1997 (I think). His first baby daughter was probably not quite two. He mentioned that his wife would like to talk to me because she was really interested in homeschooling. Now, his wife is known to us as "Molly Smith" on the board and she's one of my very favorite IRL people!

The funny thing is that the internet sometimes also becomes a source of IRL friends. There are people in my life that I would never know if it weren't for hsing message boards.

Me too! For instance, I met someone online a long, long time ago. She went to high school with my little sister and now she's a trusted confidante

It really is a small world, huh? I sure am hoping that this 4RL conference works out. I really want to be there.

After Michaela posted this -- I was anticipating the 1000th person to sign up....and I missed it!

This morning it says the forum membership list is at 1018!

And it takes to many brain cells for me to count what number I am...I'm WAY up there...

As someone who falls into this category, I would be glad to use my introductory post to give my perspective on this. I love this forum, not only for the information I glean from it, but also for the great example of gentility that the members of this community put forth. I just think it's a wonderful testimony to the beauty of our faith, and the value of homeschooling.

After being a lurker for awhile, I registered because I found myself wanting to join into conversations again and again, but couldn't (because I wasn't registered). So of course, I took the leap and registered.

I find, though, that now that I have registered, I suffer from a level of shyness that usually precludes me from contributing to the conversation, no matter how much I would like to. I'm sure I speak for plenty of lurkers out there. But at least now I have the option of joining in, when I have mustered the fortitude.

When I lurk, I sometimes feel as though I am "listening in" on someone else's conversation, behavior of which I would be ashamed IRL. But this board has been such an inspiration to me, both in my homeschooling, and in my commitment to my faith that I hope it's considered not so much listening in on someone else's conversation as it is being the audience at a roundtable discussion of matters that affect homeschooling mothers.

Anyway, that's my personal explanation.

Blessings,

Diana

Welcome, Diana!

Your explanation makes a lot of sense. I also tend to be shy and lurked from Day 1 of the boards until I just "had to post" one day. (If you don't believe my shy claims - my post count is high but I post almost only facts and prayer requests/prayer reponses.) Keep on posting, please!

Hi Diana,
You did a great job of explaining exactly what it is like. I call my "problem" shyness, but really it has more to do with old high school battle scars. (You can't talk to them...those are cheerleaders!)

I still feel a little silly sometimes jumping into some conversations especially when a lot of these lovely ladies have such close, beautiful friendships online and off. I try to remind myself though, that these are all wonderful, Christian woman who really do strive for charity, generosity and openness to new lives in what ever form they take. If they didn't want to get to know new people, they wouldn't put their thoughts, families, or selves up on this virtual billboard.

Hope to get to know you better!
