Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I posted this before but the only thing that works for me is Bare Escentuals' line now. Silicones and most oil-free moisturizers (usually dimethicone based) make me break out in painful under-the-skin cysts.

I get a pretty good match so that it looks natural and there is no "makeup look" to the skin (although if I wear the eye makeup and lip colors, you definitely see color---they are brightening and very fun!) I have very sensitive, acnegenic but dry skin.

I try on the weekends to do myself up and my kids and husband always comment and say "you look so glowing/and or beautiful". I love doing it for them, too---not just for me...for the fun of it (because it can be fun to "paint"--I LOVE color!).

Heh, Suzanne, I'm adding to this old thread too.

I've said before I'm not a makeup person at all, however, recently I had to replace my 2-year-old stash of rarely-used makeup (had to because I'm pretty sure it's not shelf-stable for 2 years).... and came across a really neat company called

Gourmet Body Treats

They are one of the top-rated companies (in terms of the # of non-toxic products they manufacture) at EWG's Skin Deep / Cosmetic Database. The two times I've used it so far I've been happy with it, and more importantly my kids and dh are happy with it -- very natural looking and I didn't feel madeup at all. A bit on the pricey side though, but since I buy makeup but once in a blue moon I figure it's worth it.

thank you stef! i was just reading the skin deep site last month - my daughter is allergic to something in the burts bees baby creme.   i also checked my bare essentials makeup and was surprised to see that it got poor ratings and then wondered what make up to buy instead. what did you get? or recommend?

ETA: it is only the eye makeup that gets bad reviews. otherwise this makeup is really very safe!

I love the way it looks on my face, however it has ruined clothing, towels, pillowcases, etc. My last straw was this Christmas when I put on a brand new turtleneck sweater and the neckline was ruined by the make-up that very day and the sweater was garbage. I called the company to cancel my subscription and they were unapologetic. I still have some because it came faster than I could use it, and I will sometimes use the small brush to apply some of their powder as a coverup. But I honestly cannot recommend it unless you are completely unattached to the fabrics in your life.

I haven't worn any make-up since. Lipstick or lip gloss is it. I have terrible skin and use an acne product and my skin stays clear as a bell as long as I don't put anything else on it. The bare essentials didn't affect my acne at all, and that's why I gave it such a long chance. I wish I could find something else that didn't bleach everything I own!

OK, so technically, I still have 2 years to go to be posting here, but the subject caught my attention. I started to have those dry red patches and looked pale as well about 2 yrs ago.

There was a Bare Escentuals thread here over a year ago and I decided to give it a try. I haven't had any problems with it ruining clothes, and it is beyond a doubt the easiest makeup I have ever used. Foolproof for a mom who often has to put makeup on with a baby trying to grab the brush. Very natural looking.

As for moisturizers, I am using Philosophy now...not cheap, but not the most expensive out there either and it has really helped with dry patches and redness.

I have never been a big fan of makeup and just within recent years have noticed that I really need something to help rid my face of "the walking dead" look. So I just picked up Bare Minerals at Target, of all places. I have to say it certainly is easy peasy lemon squeezy! Haven't noticed any discoloration on clothing, sheets etc. either, but am going to watch out for that.

molly, i've used BE for 4 years and haven't had any problems with clothes. that's really bizarre that it ruined your clothes - i wonder if it was a bad lot? what terrible customer service!

i have loved this make up. i really want something that is as easy to put on and looks as good and i'd like it to be safe. i just got rid of all my plastic #7. my makeup is empty so i don't mind switching, but i really want it to be something safe so i don't have to throw it out next month.

re moisturizer: i use avalon lavender with sunblock for my face i love the smell and that it has sunblock in it.

I just got a hand out from my dermatologist with his (and her -- a married team of dermatologists) recommendations for skin care products, make up, etc. Some of the products are recommended for specific problem, but most are not. It's a full 8.5 x 11, two-column handout. Should I post it?

In Christ,
Deborah

Deborah -

I'd love to see this handout; I'm sure I'm not alone in that. Please post it! I also have rosacea, usually very mildly, but depending on what skin care and make-up products I use, it really acts up.

Thanks.

Peace,
Nancy

Okay! Here goes. This is pretty much verbatim. (All credit goes to Dr. and Dr. Brown of Glen Burnie, MD.)

Sunscreens
Look for an SPF of 30 or more, a physical sunblock with Titanium Dioxide or Zinc Oxide will not burn the eyes. Daily use and frequent applications give the best protection.
     Neutrogena Sensitive Skin SPF 30
Neutrogena Cool Mist Mist SPF 45 Spray is good for men with hair

Moisturizers
   Theraplex
Glytone Glycolic Acids (severe dry skin)
Neostrata Foot gel (extremely dry skin)
    Cetaphil
    Aveeno
    Eucerin
    Cerave moisturizing lotion/cream

Facial Cleansers
    Neostrata Cleanser (mild*)
     Glytone Facial cleanser (moderate*)
    Obagi cleanser (mild*)
Cetaphil Cleanser (best for acne rosacea)
    Neutrogena acne wash
Purpose Gentle Cleansing Wash (acne vulgaris)

Cosmetics
    Almay
    Clinique
    Neutrogena
Eucerin Redness Relief (targets and evens out red areas -- excellent for rosacea)

Self-Tanners
    Neutrogena foam or cream
    Estee Lauder
    Clinique
   Endless Summer by Coppertone
This is not a substitute for sunscreen.

Cleansing Bars
    Dove unscented (atopic dermtitis)
    Dove white (daily use)
    Lever 2000 (antibaterial)

Deodorants
    Almay
    Tom's All Natural
    Mitchum

Lip Balm
     Glytone Nighttime Lip conditioner (moderate*)
     Neostrata Lip Conditioner (moderate*)
Dr. Dan's Lip Balm (severely chapped, good for Accutant patients)
    Vaseline Lip Balm (mild*)
     Aquaphor healing ointment (mild*)

Detergents
     All Free
     Cheer Free
     Tide Unscented

Fabric Softeners
    Downy Liquid (fragrance free)
    NO DRYER SHEETS

Information relevant only to his patients was omitted.

Btw, I have bought the following at (ta da( Costco:

     Neutrogena Sensitive Skin SPF 30
Neutrogena Cool Mist Mist SPF 45 Spray is good for men with hair
Cetaphil Cleanser (best for acne rosacea)
    Dove white (daily use)
     All Free

and I think I have seen the following there as well:

    Eucerin moisturizer
    Cetaphil moisturizer
    Neutrogena acne wash

*refers to the severity of the skin condition, not the level of the product

In Christ,
Deborah
