When did an AFI and NST become standard practice for being a few days overdue?? I'm not even due yet (4 days) and just had an u/s last week (which showed everything is fine and the baby is within the 7 -8 pound range) and today the doctor tried to schedule an AFI and NST for next week! I have NO risk factors. The baby is active, my blood pressure is 110/70 and I am perfectly healthy. I said "no we're not doing that yet -we'll see what things look like next week". He wasn't happy but I don't care. I certainly care about the well-being of my baby but do not see the need for all these tests. I have done this enough times to know when to be concerned and I am not.
Just had to vent - thanks for reading.

I think so many ob's are guided by the "cover yourself" philosophy of medicine 
Most of them tend to be over-cautious, just in case....
It surely can be frustrating!

I agree with Noreen, ESPECIALLY in Pennsylvania.  They have lost many, many doctors because of the way the law is (was) written regarding malpractice. I remember when I was pregnant with Sam, there were very few doctors willing to accept new ob patients.
Did they ever pass that legislation that was all the talk back in 2003/2004? We left in April.
Most ob doctors just want to cover themselves whether things are necessary or not. We just have to stand up for ourselves and be assertive. I feel particularly bad for first time moms who don't know the ropes.
We will be praying for a safe, on-time, smooth-as-silk delivery.

I hate to say this, but I'm glad not to be pregnant today for just this reason.
And I have a great ob! It still feels like every visit is a battle though, which gets tiring and annoying real quick.
Of course, it goes w/o saying that should my condition change by days end - so will my attitude about being pregnant. 
Hang in there! My view on it being worth it never changes.

Dumb question here, but what are AFIs and NSTs? I am not looking forward to my doctors appointment for this pregnancy. My doctor does a great job and I trust her as far as the medical field goes. However, I don't like her attitude much. She thought I was too old to be having another baby when I was pregnant with my last one at 39. I wonder what she is going to say now? Anyway, I should probably be up on the procedures she may request so I can be firm in my resolve!

Being over 35, having a history of a baby ten pounds or over and being a grand multipara are considered risk factors...

NST = non-stress test
AFI? I can't remember at the moment. Brain freeze on that one. sorry.

A woman who has had 2 or more pregnancies resulting in potentially viable offspring. A woman who is "para III" has had 3 such pregnancies. A woman who is "para VI" or more is called a grand multipara.
A woman on her first is a primipara and a women with no pregnancies is a nullipara.
If you are over 35 and have had more than 5 babies, you are an "elderly grand multipara." Really.

You're a grand multipara and didn't even know it!
I didn't know what it meant until my last pg when they tagged me with the label....even though according to this source I wasn't one until after the baby was born.

AFI is Amniotic Fluid Index - checked by ultrasound.
And yes it is a Pennsylvania thing. I talked to my friend who is a CRNP this afternoon and she assured me that's exactly what the issue is (she use to work at the practice I go to). I don't blame them though - I blame Rendell et al.  There are no caps in PA - a malpractice suit can completely destroy a practice.

Which I technically don't. He was 9lb 14 and 3/4 oz.
Of course all this won't matter if I just go into labor and have this baby soon!!

My doc scheduled a biophysical profile for me when I was just a few days overdue. He was also "uncomfortable" with me being overdue. He wanted to discuss an "end point" for my pregnancy when I was about 5 days overdue and when I said that I wanted to give it until at least 42 weeks, he said that would be "high risk."
I have a great deal of respect for my doctor, and he is generally not one to do lots of interventions...but I suppose malpractice suits are something all doctors who deliver babies have to be concerned about these days. And my doctor is a father of 3 young children, too.
He gave me an article to read about management of prolonged pregnancy at one of those last visits...I can send the link to you if you'd like.
Our baby was born 7 days past our due date. 7lbs, 10oz, no complications, very healthy. I was trying some homeopathics to promote labor when my water broke. (I don't know if the homeopathics actually helped labor to start or not, but if you're interested, I can send the names of the homeopathics I used to you.) After that, the contractions picked up on their own and Clara was born just 4 hours later. I'm sure everything will be fine for you, too!
Hang in there, I know how stressful those last days can be!

I don't know what the malpractice laws are in Texas but my last OB was majorly cautious and caused me a lot of fear in the last few weeks of my pregnancies--that is one of the reasons I left his practice.
I haven't had "the talk" about the end of my pregnancy yet with my OB--but I am expecting to have to discuss it. Many mothers in this area just schedule an induction so they can plan their time off better and make sure they get the OB of their choice!
I went 6 days overdue with my fifth baby (all was perfectly fine healthwise for me and baby--no stress indicators) and my old OB actually called me at home himself (I was 1 or 2 days late) and left a message that an opening had come up in the induction schedule if I wanted to pop in and have the baby--he wasn't at all comfortable with me going beyond my due date--it just doesn't happen much here. 
But she was my fastest labor--I had her 12 minutes after I got to the hospital!!

My how things have changed - even in just the last 5 years. I was 2 weeks overdue with Peter (he just turned 5) and I had one NST an no AFI's. The doctor let me choose if I wanted to be induced and I did (worst labor ever - I will never do that again unless I absolutely have to!).
My sister in law just arrived today - the one I wrote about in my prayer request. The first thing she said to me is "It's a full moon!". LOL! I said "Yeah, been there done that - doesn't mean a thing".
Dawn, do send me the names of the homepathics you used...but I wouldn't be surprised if I'm already using them.
While I would certainly like to have this baby soon, I will tell you that I'm not feeling stressed. Every day is just one more day to prepare for Christmas. I got some shopping done today and I'm sewing myself babywearing runana tonight. Mind you I can't walk or stand for too long of a time since I feel like my bottom is going to drop out and my hips start to get sore but otherwise I am feeling quite well so I really can't complain.

What if you're 46 and have had 4 of your 8 pregnancies since age 36?? Maybe an elderly, one foot in the grave, great-grand-multipara?? Maybe they should open a nursing home for all of us...just so they can keep their eyes on us all the time  .
Michelle, I hear you. I haven't been to an O.B. in so long (last 3 births were by home-based midwifes) I'd probably faint from shock to hear what they're doing now. Try to go into labor before your next appt....or call in sick

When I was a week overdue with my first, I took a long bike ride(over lots of railroad tracks), he was two and a half weeks overdue. That's what I get for trying to rush things!!
