Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We have a young girl (15) who comes to help us occasionally as a mother's helper. She is a lovely young lady, Catholic, but from a broken home. Her story is a sad one; her mother, a troubled soul, "melted down" when her youngest child, (our little friend), was only 6 years old. She abandoned the family leaving the dad to care for their five children...they have all managed as well as can be expected, with God's help over the years. The parents eventually divorced and the mother remarried and moved away but there were still trips and visits 3 or 4 times a year...

Well, this lovely girl just found out Monday that her mother has died...suddenly...she was ill and waiting for a kidney transplant, but was not anywhere near death. The mother died suddenly in her sleep. Needless to say, my little friend is devastated...our family loves her so...I want to get her a statue or icon of Mary that will give her some comfort and remind her that her heavenly mother is always there for her...I told her to lean on Our Heavenly Mother during this time when I spoke to her last week. She seemed to really cling to my words...

So, after all my long-windedness, I want this statue to be special...Do any of you have a statue or icon of our Lady under a title that would be appropriate? I was thinking of an icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Hope and even thought of getting her a copy of A Story of a Soul since St. Therese lost her mother, and including a statue of Our Lady of the Smile with the book...but it isn't EXACTLY what I want for this special girl...

Any thoughts? And if you could say a prayer for this grieving family, esp. for the repose of the mother's soul, I know they would be grateful!   Thanks so much!

I think you are on the right track--a devotion to the Blessed Mother is especially key for children who have no earthly mother of their own. I don't have a concrete suggestion of my own. I have been thinking about it though--quite a bit--since it was a frequent topic of conversation with Nicole and I would like to get something for her children. They are younger, though and you might actually have a better time of it. I think your statue idea is a good one. I wonder, though, is there a book specifically, which will inspire and nurture a devotion to Mary as Mother?

I would look for a nurturing image of Our Lady...her holding Jesus. Like the Madonna and the Chair that M. Montessori used in her homes.

But the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe is so nurturing, that it might touch her. I weep at the tenderness she gave to Juan Diego. So sweet and loving in her speech and gestures. An ideal mother.

Yes, I agree. I have been so touched by her mercy and patience with him; I think she is ideal. We will pray for your friend.

Jennifer,

I found this holy card at Crossroads Bookstore last week. I can't seem to find the same picture online.

Our Lady of Divine Providence

Our Lady of Good Counsel and the miraculous story behind this 'angel held image' is moving to look at, how that picture has interceeded miraculously for so many is also inspiring - I read all this from the handbook on it from Seton years ago and you can buy a photograph of the image from Seton - we had permission years ago to have it enlarged, so that we have one in our lounge at life size.

This is what the miraculous and tender image looks like.
