This morning my 7 year old said to me
"Hey Mom after Religious Ed are you going to get our Easter Baskets."
yikess! I forgot to put something together for them! This morning I am thinking it would be nice to put together some baskets with a CM theme. Maybe a few artists pencils, a bug jar, a few art stickers. But, I am out of time  and with 6 kids  , I don't want to buy a lot of things. Any suggestions towards a nice Easter basket that would support learning?

Helen,
We usually do art supplies in Easter baskets: a fresh pack of colored pencils, clean watercolors, maybe some personalized pencils. This year, my little ones will also find a new Signing Time DVD. My dd 9 will find the Therese movie. DS 11 will find the Narnia DVD. The older boys both want specilized art supples, so theirs will be different from the same old Crayola fare. A little candy, and we're all set.

Helen, my youngest can't have candy so we keep the candy score down as much as possible. Each year my children receive a new packet of seeds (something child-friendly like sunflowers or carrots), as well as a couple of nice books. Youngest will find a new train and a couple of finger puppets. Oldest will find the Narnia DVD. Middle son is getting A Child's Garden of Verses. It's a board book format but has all the lovely old fashioned artwork. I love the art supplies idea. I think a pocket field guide would also be nice. My boys love candles so we've tucked in scented votives before. Pastel felt and embroidery floss would be pretty in a young girl's basket. Prayer cards would also be nice.

I found the easiest way to do it -- a BIG family Esater basket with goodies (jellybeans and my dh's must have: peeps!) and then have individual books or fun things at their place 9not in baskets). This minimizes the sugar while still having fun.
I've gotten each of the kids a craft activity and then will get each a book that they've been wanting or a good DVD...I still have to do my shopping too......

This year each of the kids is getting a fish. Charles got a Betta last year for Easter and nearly killed it with love.

Yikes! Thanks for the reminder. I haven't done my shoppring yet, either! One thing we usually do is a tiny potted plant for each dc. Usually something cute like an African violet or mini-rose. They sell them in sweet little painted pots at our local grocer. Some years we have done tiny gardening tools and seed packets. Strawberries or raspberries make a great alternative to candy, btw.

I always toss in a new toothbrush.
I usually give a CD, book, and a mug for Easter, and add chocolate and peeps. A few holy cards, and the gifts are complete.

Every year (much to my poor dh's dismay) I tuck a new stuffed bunny into each of the dc's baskets. They still have each and every one of them, all with their own names and places in their kingdom of animal friends! It's now a tradition and we'll probably be able to open a museum someday with all the bunnies alone 
We go light on candy here too, usually it's chocolate bunny and a few jelly beans.
One thing we have done that's not necessarily related to their individual baskets, but that we do during holy week, is we try to ramp up the sacrifices and good deeds and each time they "do" something good or sacrificial they put a cut out cross in a basket or bowl, then on Easter morning the basket of crosses is miraculously filled with jelly beans!! Hope you're all having a blessed holy week!

We usually give sunglasses, a coloring book, board books and small outdoor toys like sidewalk chalk, a rubber ball, a kite or bubbles. No candy because they get enough of that from grandparents.
I haven't shopped yet. I like the ideas of small gardening tools and seeds. Someone may get a magnifying glass because ours just broke. When I was a kid I used to get a new bathing suit every year. That could get expensive! I know they would love art supplies or playdoh. Is playdoh CM?

We have been having musical themes here because the kids take a Kindermusic class here at home.
Last St. Nick's day they got their own Glockenspiels and this Easter they are each getting an octave of children's good quality
Hand Bells
I thought they would look pretty bell-end-up in the Easter grass because they are all different colors.
I'm contemplating a jewelery box with jewelery for my daughter. But I think we'll save that for her birthday in August.
For candy, I bought the gold and silver wrapper Hershey's mini candy bars. My son is doing his own unit study on gold and gold bars so I thought it went along.

Gulp.... ....it sounds like we get way more candy than most. We have for them the St. Maximillian Kolbe movie, and compliments to this board, the Donut Man video, some of the Glory Story tapes, Rosaries and a Rosary ring for one ds, Divine Mercy stickers, a new bug box, new pencils, some rocks that grow into a crystal garden from the science store and books. Baby dd is getting one of those adorable birds that plays an accurate call.

Maybe most . . . but not all, Gwen! We always have one large family basket filled with candy each Easter. Being a certified chocoholic, I love it as much as the kids do!

That's why I do the big family basket -- have to "teach" the children which Easter candies are the "right" ones (that is, all the ones mom loves )

This year, my girls are each getting a fan with either an image of Our Lady or of Jesus and Divine Mercy.
My ds will be getting The Day the Sun Danced DVD...
Last year, they each got a tea cup with some M&M's in them and a scapular and a package of seeds...
One year I gave them garden gloves and watering cans along with some candy....
I haven't finished this years compilation partly because I don't want anymore baskets in the house...I was thinking of doing little gift bags and filling them with a couple of yummies...
We own the hand bells, Amie, and we love them!
Better run...my readers are coming into the room!

My basket is all junk, but that is ok. I dont normally indulge them too much with their weird boy games. They are each getting a new Yu Gi Oh video game to play on the car trip home easter evening and a whole lot of candy (so there is plenty for Mom and Dad to sneak.)
Also they will all receive Narnia, to share.
BabyB is getting a wee doodle pad thingy, the name eludes me. but its got a magnetised pen that draws?

I just have a little. If I have time I'll pop in the store and get some gardening gear, at least seeds to inspire. I have a big Thomas train fan here, so I have the large treasury of all Rev. W. Awdry stories, and a caboose for his basket. Plus some little trinkets, like fancy pencils and then some crayons.
Since he has food allergies, we are limited. I'll get some safe pretzels and cookies. He'll be getting candy from his aunt and uncle that I've already passed on.

Just wanted to add for you last-minute shoppers (that's me, too) that A.C. Moore has a 50% coupon this week. That's off only one regular priced item, but usually it's 40%. If you sign up online you can receive the emails with the coupons and return several times that week with your printouts.

What a fabulous idea! This year I planned to do a family basket for most of the candy, an Easter song cd and playing cards. I also planned to give each child a smaller individual bunny bag with a small amount of candy, but now I'm going to have to give some serious thought to teacups!
This isn't a basket idea, but I thought I'd share what we did to our eggs today. We made Easter alphabet eggs. (My four year old twins are working on their letters.) We wrote in wax crayon on each egg with a capital letter and the corresponding small letter. When we dyed them, the letters stayed white.
