I wasn't quite sure if this was the correct forum, but here goes!
The town next to ours is planning on implementing a daytime curfew. This is to help stem the tide of crime. The town is number one in burglary. There are many issues to address here but it's not being done. The dads are mostly deployed and gone for 14-15 months at a time. That makes a BIG difference. The high schools have open campuses so students are allowed off during school hours. The school distric refuses to close them for various reasons (can't feed them all during lunch, don't want to be the bad guys). Then when kids are caught burglarizing and asked why they aren't in school, they respond, "I'm homeschooled." Why ask that silly question? Obviously, they're not in school because they stealing!
Anyway, our Catholic homeschool group is working on fighting this. The town I live in will use a curfew if it works in the other town. I am in our neighboring town all the time for various things with my children. It doesn't sit well with me at all.
What are your thoughts on this?

While I don't agree with the idea of government imposed limitations on our liberty, I see immense wisdom in homeschooling families practicing self-imposed curfews. We have made it a practice over the past seventeen years of having our children remain inside during "school hours" and only being outside our home with adult supervision during times when regular schools are in session. This is simply a matter of prudence.
Another consideration of the aforementioned curfew issue...if daytime crime is on the increase to the degree that a curfew seems necessary then homeschoolers would also do well to keep their children in the home or with adult supervision, as a matter of protection. We no longer live in the era when it was safe to roam the streets day or night.

another stupid law that does nothing for criminals and punishes law abiding citizens.
if there are more crimes being committed, then 2 things need to be done to the criminals:
harsher punishments esp for repeat offenders and to deter repeat offenses
more law inforcement to keep the peace
if anything I think raising kids in a police state is the best way to make criminals. after all they are already used to not having rights and freedom already.
by all means, let's run them through metal detectors, put them in rooms without windows for most of the day, and restrict their daytime activities.
if the local area is bad enough to need forms of martial law - then the best thing the citizens can do is get out of dodge, imho.
frankly, i think it should be illegal to have law enforced curfews outside of martial law.
I think of all I did as a teen that I benefited from greatly. I worked full-time. Something that I would not be allowed to do now. I walked to and from work and school (I didn't get a license until after I married. and it was faster to walk than wait for the school buses to make their rounds and there weren't city buses in my area or at night.) That income was not play money - it was a need for me and I stayed out of trouble.
my kids are rarely out of my sight because the oldest is only 12, but I fully expect them to run errands, take classes, visit friends and such as they get older. And no, I don't think the law should be telling me they can't do those things because some other yahoo is on a crime spree. I just don't see criminals saying, "oh man I can't rob that house this afternoon! I've got curfew! darn, I really wanted to go too."

Hi everyone,
I live in the town KC is talking about. My kids are also too young to be out by themselves (they aren't even allowed to play in the front yard by themselves), but later on I might need to send them on errands and I don't want them stopped and then have to prove that they are homeschooled and are allowed to be doing what they are doing (because they wouldn't be robbing houses!) Its just ridiculous because the school board and city council are trying to make this issue only a police issue instead of owning up to the fact that it is also the schools' issue. A vast majority of these crimes are committed by youth during school hours, like robbing houses on their lunch break. If they close the campuses, then these kids would not be able to just freely leave and go do whatever they want. And I agree with Martha when she said that the kids who are committing the crimes are not going to care about the curfew, it won't stop them one bit. I mean they are out committing crimes! Obviously laws don't mean much to them. It is so frustrating that the school board won't do their job, and for such silly reasons as not being able to feed them or not wanting to be the bad guys. Please! Grow up! If my child went to public high school (and now you see one of the reasons we homeschool) I would want the campus closed for the safety of the students. I remember the crazy rush trying to get off campus fast enough to eat and then get back from when I was in high school.
Unfortunately we also can't get out of dodge, we are military so we don't really get to choose where we live, I mean we could live in the town KC lives in but we can't afford to move and this issue will be in that town soon too I'm sure.
