Another question! I'm in the market for a new coffee maker. I'm eyeing different ones and wondering if anyone could give me feedback on stainless steel pots? I have the glass with white plastic...next pot will definitely have black not white, but I was leaning towards stainless. Questions to those who have: does it clean better, taste better? Or does it build up bitter acids faster than glass? Does it stay looking nice?
Silly questions, but I'm hoping someone can just give me some opinions.

We are in the market for a Bunn--the model with the thermal carafe. They are pricey but brew a mean cup of joe. Ebay has new ones for the best price. Alice's recommendation for this coffeemaker a while back on the Very Last Starbucks thread caused me to put a Bunn on my Christmas list...esp. since I don't frequent Starbucks anymore...

Have you ever considered a french press ? I love mine  . I gave up on coffee makers after breaking so many glass carafes. They are easy to clean....and I just read an article that said a french press was voted number one for brewing the best tasting coffee.

I agree with Donna -- the french press makes a great cup of coffee. There are different size presses so you can make as good a single cup as a full pot.
When I graduated undergrad, I went and lived in Virginia with Mom and Dad while I tried to find work.....we used a stainless steel pot with a coffee makers for years (I lived there 3 years and they were still using it till after my Dad died -- about 10 years later!). The stainless steel looks good, is easy to clean and doesn't retain the smells of old coffee. The worst that happens to it is if the kids get ahold of it and bang it on the floor or table  -- it will get dents! The one Mom and Dad had wasn't thermal, so you might want to invest in a tea-cozy (or YOU could knit one!) or a thermos to pour the coffee so it stays cozy warm.

 MacBeth keeps telling me to get a French press. I had to laugh at Donna's broken carafes. I have the same Mr. Coffee I got as a wedding gift over 18 years ago. For the first 13 years, we only used it for company. Then, it started creeping into daily life. I've broken several Adagio teapots and teacups in the last year (thankfully, Mary Chris introduced me to the plastic Ingenuitea), but not that coffee carafe. I can't get a new coffeepot until this one breaks...

Stainless steel French Press here. Broke 2 glass French press carafes in 3 months so we are sticking to the stainless.
Found that we were using too much coffee with the Bunn, especially since we like strong coffee.
I like really hot coffee so a preheated Press pot gives me what I need.
Although it is not Rick's preference I also like the scalding coffee from our stainless percolater. I love watching it bubble up and have that sound mixed with memories of my Mom's kitchen,inconvenient but peaceful house with gas but without electricity after an ice storm (before the press pot) and camping and sailing trips where we made coffee in the insulated world of our camper or small sailboat.

I'm a "smell" person. With the Mr. Coffee and with the percolator, the coffee smell wafts in the air. What about the french press and the Bunn?

The coffee pot I have is the one dh brought into the marriage...I believe it's Mr. Coffee, too. But I've been married less years than you, Elizabeth!
This is a Thermal French Press that I've been eyeing. This is a new one I just saw. I wouldn't have wait until I knit a coffee-cozy! I'm behind on my projects!
I'm also a smells person...I love the smell of brewing coffee, but I dislike the smell of the coffee sitting on the burner. I'm hard to please!
Where is Bunn sold? Has anyone used a Cuisinart?
We've been going back and forth as to what to get, and then dh suggests maybe just go to an espresso machine!

Now, I like those stainless steel FP's. We have two glass ones -- a large one and a single cup. They're glass and I always worry about breakage (altho we haven't broken one yet and have been using for 3+ years).
These look like a definite wish list item -- but since I've tapped "it'd be a great Christmas present for me honey " (Santa's bringing a digital camera!) I better wait for my anniversary in March.....
