Dh is going to paint our bedroom in the next couple of weeks - we have builder's white right now and I am trying to think of a nice calming color - "serenity" amd "shelter" are words I want the color to be. I would love any ideas.

4 walls.. one has the closet door the opposite has the window.. walls blank walls at either side.

one blank wall and the wall with the closet are a dark sorta sage/olive green. The other two walls are white (a warm white.. has just barely a hint of peach or pink in it.. but on the wall it just looks white)

the closet doors and frame are white (on the green wall) and I have a long horizontal mirror (sorta antique) in a white frame on the green wall.

On the windows we have dk green curtains against the white wall and the things framed on the white walls are framed in dk green or black (one wall has a family tree frame with small pictures that hang off it.. it's a black truck with green leaves) the family pictures are black and whites.

the white walls keep it from being too closed but the dk green gives it a calming and cozy feel (light green can lose the cozy).

A very soft coffee-with-cream colour and ivory trim. My 10yos loves it so much he's asked for the same colour in his room. If a 10yo boy with ADHD and OCD issues finds it calming, then...

Ours is light blue (not my choice), with a cream/sand ceiling. It is very calming, but on the cool side. When we repaint, I think I would want a cozy green, like Jodie described. My dd's room is like that and I love it.

Green is considered calming and "natural," a sort of all-purpose soother.

Almond color. A sort of tan. Wood furniture goes well with it. And....I can mix and match bedding for the seasons.

I've always like the sage/green that Jodie mentioned above.

I have a friend with a dark eggplant on one of the walls, which makes the room very cozy.

Well my husband calls it North Carolina Tarheel blue, but I think the real name is Cornflower (with white trim).

It's more fresh than soothing. If it's too soothing, I won't get out of bed.

Well, mine's dark red...probably not that soothing to everyone else, but I love the warmth and drama. It's got a lovely French country style with touches of toile, antique pieces from the 40s and vintage New Orleans souvenirs (where we were married). I love it. Our home is over 100 years old, so it suits the style of the house.

Or I'll fall into bed and go straight to sleep!

I remember reading that your bedroom should be a place where you could feel comfortable unclothed, so someday when we don't have to have builder's white anymore, I think it'll be a bright blue or a deep red, a color with a little energy.

One thing I learned from a previous house is that I am not at home in green. Am I blue? YES!

Our bedroom is 2 different shades of blue (2 walls a lighter blue, the other 2 a darker blue), then the bathroom (which you can see from the bedroom - there's an arch, then the sinks) is a soft yellow. I was going for a seashore feel (I love the ocean).

I like it very much. It's cool (which is important during the hot months in Arizona) and it's soothing to me ;)

On a related note, we have painted all our rooms with "oops" paint from Home Depot and Lowes. They offer $5 gallon cans that people have returned/refused. We just wait and wait until there's a color that's close to what we're looking for. If we need 2 gallons, we will color match and pay for the 2nd gallon full-price. It's saved us quite a bit, but you definitely have to wait and check often to find a color you like! We painted our bedroom, each boy's bedroom, our living room and our kitchen that way. We even painted our outside trim with 2 gallons mixed of "oops" paint! I'm still watching for the right color for our hallway and 2nd bath ;)

Hooray for Carolina Blue! ;-)

Yep, I'm a Tarheel and my master bedroom is pretty much that color. You can see pictures of it at my blog in the background quite often It's cheery and soothing.

Our bedroom walls are "Sourus" by Behr which are a sage green. Very calming. Our foyer is the same color, and most of my family members have a room painted this color now, having fallen in love with it.

Another nice color for a bedroom would be "french silver". It is a blue with a hint of silvery gray in it. (Think Lourvre Blue or true Sky blue) It is very pretty. We have it in our family room and everyone loves that too.

Good luck!

Thank you everyone for the ideas - and the pictures - I have loved looking at the various rooms. I have asked dh - he prefers a blue/silver blue/tarheel blue - I like the idea of a sage green - though am happy with a blue too. We usually use Benjamin Moore low VOC paint - so I have to look through the Benjamin Moore colors.

Of course I will have to then change my bedding - but we have had the same bedding for 9 years now, so I feel justified.

Cay - my dream house would have a little tea room attached to the master bedroom with sofa and tea kettle and lots of books - well we can dream huh!

Definitely!

I told my dh that I want to knock out the windows in my oldest dd's bedroom and put French doors there and enclose the slab that's outside her room and make a sunroom out of it.

His words: "What do you need that for?"

Hmmmm...I have lots of ideas.

His next words: "Save your money and I'll build it."

Anybody want to buy a book while I'm dreaming?

Marilyn,

Do you get the Potter Barn catalog? They use Benjamin Moore colors in their catalog, maybe there is an idea in there.

Our bedroom is still builders white too, I'm hoping to paint it this year.

Here Is a 'tour' of our bedroom. The sage-y green works so well with the white woodwork and hardwood floors, and I've accented with cranberry here and there. I love it.

We recently painted our livingroom, I never took pics. But the walls are a deep army green, one accent wall above the mantle isa deep rich coffen brown, as our the roman shades on the windows, and the white woodwork really pops, I love that look!

I just want to say thanks for posting this Marilyn! I'm so inspired! Of course, with all these great ideas I can't decide, but I'm definitely going to get some paint swatches!

Melanie -- why do you have the two different shades of blue? When we moved in here 1-1/2 years ago, the master was painted with 2 different shades of maroon/burgundy/purple -- it's rather dark! Two of the walls -- the one with more windows and the opposite wall are a slightly lighter color while the 2 end walls are the darker. It's weird but now I've gotten used to it and we've covered it with pictures, so that helps ! It's so dark that it would take TONS of paint to cover it. But I'm just wondering why it was done? Here's a link to a blog post I did last year showing the various colors -- you'll see the two colors in the first picture.

I love the idea of the OOPS paint -- never even thought of that one!
