For years now I have been cleaning with Vinegar. It works great, but it surely does not smell very nice! We always light a Yankee Candle on cleaning day to neutralize the vinegar smell!

I will be buying some essential oils today...a BIG treat for me. Would those of you who clean with them please share your favorite uses and scents. Thanks!!

Lavender, lavender, lavender! And occasionally oil of orange. If they've been sick, eucalyptus. But mostly...
lavender!

How do you clean with essential oil?

I use a natural cleaner called Sun & Earth that has a wonderful tangerine smell (it's actually orange oil). I also like their laundry soap. I have used Mrs. Meyer's lavender scented cleaning supply, but it isn't available locally anymore.

Blessings,
Louise, mom of 11

I made my own lavender oil this year....and just love it! Start with a light olive oil...(I use the Gold Selection from Trader Joe's), place clean lavender buds, blooms into a glass jar, cover with the oil and let steep in a dark, cool cupboard for 24 hours.... now
strain the oil into another glass jar(I use a fine strainer from the dollar store), place more fresh, clean buds and blooms into the jar and keep repeating this process for about seven days...or more if you like it stronger....It is worth the small amount of effort of straining, especially when you look at the cost of the essential oils.   A friend of mine also boils water,
then steeps the branches of the lavender plants in the water to use for cleaning ( anti-bacterial qualities). Lovely Lavender!!!!

Lavender it is! Thank you ladies. I was going to pick up the Eucalyptus or tree tee oil as well for the upcoming flu season.
I also read about this mixture that worked well for the flu and cold season:

When away from home, keep a mixture of lemon essential oil, lavender
essential oil and distilled water (40 drops lemon essential oil and 30 drops
lavender essential oil to 4 ounces of distilled water) in a dark-colored,
glass, fine-mist spray bottle. Spray on hands immediately after trips to
grocery stores, doctor, etc. or any time you are shaking people’s hands. At
home, wipe all doorknobs frequently with this mixture. Keep a bottle at
home, in the car and at work.

Louise, there are tons of neat things you can do with the essential oils.
-Mix with borax to sprinkle on rugs before vacuuming. An added benefit of borax is that it kills fleas if you happen to have pets.
-Add some to your vinegar/water spray
-Add some to your plain dishwashing liquid
-Add some to just plain water to mist the air
-If you add several drops of Eucalyptus to your wash water before doing laundry it is said to kill dust mites
-Put a few drops that lovely Lavender that the ladies suggested on a wet washcloth into the dryer!
-Mix lemon drops with olive oil for furniture polishing

As I said the smell of Vinegar gets old, so this will be a BIG treat for me. I think it will even motivate me to clean (well, for a while at least until the newness of it wears off! )

Oh...good this thread reminds me to get some essential oils for our cleaning. I have been using only vinegar since me moved in to our house. (18 months ago)

I have yet to use lavendar. I think it needs to top my list!!

Genevieve.....I had a rather poor crop this year, but,
was able to harvest from other areas....like our church,
and local neighbors, or stores that have lavender for
landscaping.(of course I did ask permission, first! )Look at nurseries now for plants on sale, as they are cleaning out their supplies for the fall/winter supplies.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a book or something about cleaning with essential oils? I've never used them but am quite interested.

Oooh Grapefruit, that would be a fresh clean scent.
Too bad they are so expensive, I'd buy lots of yummy scents!
Kathleen, I wanted to grow lavender this year, but never ended up seeing it at our area stores. I wonder if it grows well in Viginia's Zone? I had planned on drying it and having it hang upside down from my pot rack, but chamomile is hanging there in its place!
Becky, there are lots of websites that talk about cleaning with essential oil. I just did a search on yahoo and alot came up.
I will keep my eye out for books, and let you know if I see any.
One fun book that I have which mentions the essential oils and other neat scents is Creating a Scentsational (play on words, but I don't think I spelled that correctly!) Home.
Its downstairs...I'll run and get the name of the author later if you are interested.

[QUOTE=Becky Parker] Does anyone have a suggestion for a book or something about cleaning with essential oils?

I've enjoyed Clean House, Clean Planet by Karen Logan.
