I'm about to tackle a project our family has talked about for a while -- my youngest brother is getting married in October and I am compiling a book of family recipes to give to the bride-to-be, but also copies to give to all the family. I think I'm going to use MasterCook software to keep it together, as my mother already had the software, but now I'm wondering about binding. Has anyone done this before? I would like to create something that more can be added, but something a little more sturdy than regular paper in a 3 ring binder. My other options: use plastic sheets for each page in a 3-ring, which is a lot of work, or sturdier paper.

How about binding done by Staples or such? Can the pages be replaced, added on? I don't even know the type of options out there, so any input, advice would be great! Thanks!

My MIL actually inserted the pages into a magnetic photo album. That would be a lot of work if you made multiple copies. Could everyone pitch in and insert the pages for themselves? That way the pages are "splatter-safe" and you can add recipes as need and possibly file them according to your preference.

A few years back, I set my mom down and had her translate all her recipes from German to English for me.
I didn't organize them in a fancy binder, but just a 3 ring binder in clear plastic sheets.

Your gift is very thoughtful and one that she will cherish throughout her marriage.

I have made 3 similar cookbooks (one for each of my babies and given to all of the women in the family). I find copying is expensive so I print them off my computer. I had mine bound by Kinkos using a spiral binding. It can be taken off and more pages can be added, but you may prefer (when the time comes) to make a second cookbook.

I urge you to include pictures of the pple who submit the recipes. I did this the year my MIL died and it has become a family treasure. I have also included notes about the submissions (my polish bil's family submissions are always funny) and it really does make the book come alive.

I hope your book turns out beautifully and that it becomes a family heirloom.

pardon my serial posting! I forgot to add, you might consider putting your cookbook in a plastic cover - I used clear plastic for the front so that my "cover page" could be seen through it and then the back covers are my children's birthstone colors so that they can be told apart easily. Kinkos also sells these and they are pretty inexpensive.

Thanks for the advice. I was actually looking at Kinko's for different binding options. The photo idea is great. MasterCook does have a photo option, and I was actually going to have some copies of the original handwritten recipes from my grandmother and great-great aunt who have passed on, but pictures of the person would make it even more fabulous!!!

Maybe I can incorporate some of the ideas of notebooks, like the Easter Vigil or First Communion notebooks like Alice and Elizabeth made.
