Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My 3 year old broke out with chicken pox yesterday. He isn't too miserable yet. I am a little worried, with it coming on the back of a vicious stomach flu, that his immune system isn't very strong.

It seems that most of the complications of chicken pox are the result of a secondary infection.

I gave him a cocktail of orange juice, CLO and powdered vit. C this morning. I'll keep the lesions clean and I cut his nails as short as possible.

Any other ideas for building immunity quickly in a child so young and keeping the lesions from getting infected?

You can't catch a break, can you? Praying!

I have 3 more kids who need to get it. If they didn't get it from the same place Dom did, then we are in for a long haul since they'll get it from him.

I really thought I had shaved off enough purgatory time with that stomach flu but i guess i have more time to work on than I thought.

Well, we don't have a lot of big things coming up so I guess this is as good a time as any. And I am glad for them to have it young. Just want to avoid complications.

Bridget,
I learned about calendula tea today. Steep calendula for 15 minutes. Chilren should drink 1/4-1/2 cup of tea every hour until symptoms lessen and then a cup a day until the pox are gone. There were 32 people waiting at the post office yesterday, so Michael didn't mail your package. I'm retrieving it from the van and sticking some calendula/st.john'w wort/plaintain/comfrey salve in the box.

Oh thank you so much! You are way a head of me in this herbal/holistic remedy thing. Dominic will be the guinea pig. I'll figure out how to treat him to be ready for the others.

It's never dull...

Bridget,
Kayleigh, my oldest dd, had an ugly illness when she was 2 1/2 years. Two days after Christmas we rushed her to the emergency room and the dr. and nurses were so alarmed that she might have meningitis that they immediately gave her two shots of antibiotics and began running various tests. She was so sick, poor little thing.

The dr. almost admitted her but he was an intern and decided to send us home. I guess he second thought his decision because he personally called us at home that night to check on her. I had to follow up the ER with a visit to her regular dr who was concerned she wasn't getting over it quicker.

After about 2 or 3 weeks she was slowly recovering but began walking into walls. I can still remember her walking down the hallway and veering to the side and bumping the wall repeatedly. Worried again, we rushed her back to the dr. only to be told that a very bad viral infection can mess up the fluid in the ears and cause one's equilibrium to become off-balanced. She was put on Dramamine.

It was just an overall nasty , wicked bug.

Fast forward 2 1/2 months after the ER visit. Brand new week-old baby in the house. Oldest ds comes home from pre-school with the chicken pox. Kayleigh begins vomiting and showing signs of relapse.

My mother, bless her heart, lived with us for almost two weeks. Dh had to take a week off.

Thank heavens the baby was healthy as a horse. I don't think we had clean sheets for a week!

Anyway, come Easter Sunday we thought we were doing good. Kayleigh had on her new Easter dress and I was brushing her hair up into a pony tail. That's when I saw a ton of pox covering the back of her neck under her hairline.

Anyway, Kayleigh did get the chicken pox and had the worse case of all. It was a very bad case but she didn't develop any ugly complications with it...praise God.

Luckily---as bad as it was---it left no scar marks. My oldest ds had a pretty bad case too and has one scar mark on his forehead (but I remember him picking at that spot too).

I find little girls handle it worse because it can get on their bottoms. Kayleigh spent lots of time playing in an oatmeal bath. I was told to get Aveeno Soothing Bath Treatment (it's 100% Natural Colloidal Oatmeal) and it worked wonderfully. Can you believe I still have a box of it in the medicine cabinet.

Sorry to be so lengthy in detail but it's so vivid in my mind. I've replayed this episode in my life more than once.    Gosh, why is it these events are the most memorable? Everything is as fresh as it was 14 years ago.

I'll be praying for both of you. I know someone will offer advice on building his immunity. Just thought I'd offer my support, say "yes, his immunity is definitely weak", offer the Aveeno suggestion, and assure you that it does get better.

Bridget -

I still have one who needs it; can we pay a visit?

Praying for you to get peacefully through this.

Peace,
Nancy
