Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm sure most of us agree that babies don't really need much of the thousands of 'must haves' sold in baby stores.

What about baby toys? What do you think are best to have? My 11 month old mostly just empties the toy basket then looks around for someone's Redwall book to chew on.

I'm thinking of keeping the stacking cups, board books, music toys and plastic animals.

Any thoughts on your absolute favorite toys for the littest ones?

Can I get away with NO baby toys?   She is just as happy with the tupperware cupboard.

Bridget, my 15 month old sounds just like your wee one I've tossed out more board books with this little guy than ever before, he LOVES to chew them to bits Forget the teething biscuits and frozen teethers, books are his thing. Hmmm...He's actually starting to sit still for a short read now, but still prefers to eat them, sigh!

My staples for him are:
Stacking Cups
Hide Inside Soft Box with small stuffed sensory animals
Balls of any kind
Hammer Table from Magic Cabin
All Musical items, play piano, shakers, tambourine, whistles
Ball Party by Tomi
Strike a Ball

Everything else just gets thrown, dumped or ignored, hence too much clean up for mom,

Oh and then there's the tupperware cupboard and dish towel drawer, definate favorites!

By baby # 6 we discovered something interesting. The baby isn't interested in the baby toys - only what everyone else has. I'm with Bridget - just use the stackable tupperware, plastic pitchers, pots and pans with banging spoon if necessary.

I do have a few board books - but those I'm considering tossing and a few rattles to watch for eye tracking. I have simple puzzles and my hands on curriculum and all the other dc toys. Plus - boxes are great. We make tunnels out of them. Not very elegant - but they are easily disposable when the interest wanes!

Mine have been the same way---love their siblings toys! and books from the library. Eek. We have to put those up or they would look like a beaver chewed on them. The thing mine have really liked is a soft ball. I like to make wool balls with bells in them. THey can't hurt anyone or anything with them.

That's important, isn't it?!

I think the one thing I (notice I didn't say the baby) couldn't part with is her plastic baby doll. Babydd is our only dd and the only one who wouldn't whack the baby (like her brothers). She does chew and slobber on it, and I've even caught her "driving" it across the floor, a la her big brothers, but it's just too cute to watch her sing "Laaa, laaa, laaa, laaaaaah..." to it and rock it back and forth

too cute... my 2yo loves her baby
I always found that she didn't need much... she loved the stacking rings and wooden blocks (hand me down toys from DS). Truth is though, that I think she was happiest being hugged and lying there on the grass outside where she could explore!
NOW she wants little figures, which do double duty in everything ... her favourites are the gorillas...

Elegant simplicity: a silver rattle. The silver stays somewhat cool for a teething infant, and ours makes a gentle, magical "tinkle-tinkle" sound. Forget the cheap plastic stuff and save me from horrible electronic noises! A silver rattle is best baby toy we ever recieved.

We have one basket of infant toys that I've gathered over 12 years and five children. They are mostly rattles, stacking cups, plastic links, teethers, etc.

The one infant toy that I have liked the most of all is the
Whoozit.
I think we received it as a gift for one of my younger girls. I love it because it is soft, colorful, and easy for a young baby to grab. My girls have found it very entertaining. And it's great to bring along when out in public. Although it is a rattle, it is very quiet. I wouldn't bring it to Mass, but it would be fine just about anywhere else.

By the way, they sell a huge one that is the size of a pillow. The one I like is the small one.

We also have a basket of toys that we have gathered over the years. Mostly wooden rattles and interestingly shaped wooden figures. My older babies all seem to like to sit on the floor and play with kitchen utensils like plastic whisks, measuring cups and spoons.

It doesn't take much money invested in expensive toys to please a baby does it? A few nice items in a basket and they are happy as can be!

I second wooden rattles. They sound so much better on the ear. The stacking cups are still a huge hit here, and then small balls that will roll. We've ditched the board books, and the many stuffed animals that babies are often given at their birth, too. Cute, but how many stuffed animals does one family need? If the child doesn't develop an attachment to it, then out it goes.

Julie's Stuffis a great resource for wooden toys and rattles for babies. I was inspired by this thread to buy a few rattles because we have no baby toys around anymore. I bought the HABA Triola for Bridget and the HABA Kringel Ring for Sean. Julie is a fellow homeschool mom and offers beautiful toys at reasonable prices. I was very pleased with the rattles.
