Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

still throwing up after 5 days! Sorry if I've grossed anyone out here, but I desperately need some pro-active approaches to treating my 6yo ds's prolonged nausea and strong gag reflex. We've been dealing with a virus around here for almost 2 weeks (staggered beginnings among the children) but ds6 has been throwing up since last Sunday night. With my other 3 it has lasted about 3 days each (or so) and we've made it through on the usual routine of no fluids for 24 hrs (while vomiting and having diarrhea) other than tiny sips of Pedialyte or Gatorade, followed by slowly increasing fluids once the initial attack is over. With my oldest, who has always had a sensitive tummy and would throw up at random as an infant and toddler, many times also in the car over the years, things always seem to go from bad to worse so quickly. He just can't seem to stop throwing up, almost making himself do so when he feels uncomfortable. He's been admitted many times over the years to the outpatient clinic and ER for rehydration.

Why is this happening? The pediatrician says it's due to his strong gag reflex combined with the fact that he seems to "cross the line" into cyclical dehydration much sooner than my other children This is the kind where oral rehydration isn't possible (she says)because his body is already too dehydrated to tolerate anything. She says that once he reaches this point, IVs are necessary for him. I just hate that I can't seem to head this off before it happens.

We tried anti-nausea rectal suppositories (prescribed by the doc on day 4 this time) and she thinks they didn't work because we didn't have them in his system any earlier than day 4 (too far gone into dehydration at this point). Anyway, he was IV'd yesterday and is now feeling better but still nauseated a bit, and still throwing up but not continuously anymore.

I'm desperate for some ideas to take to the doctor about a more pro-active approach with this child in the future. I want to do more than just pray for him. Am I wrong to think this is nuts? He's lost 5 pounds this time and I can't help but think there's got to be something out there to give him some relief much sooner. I'll take any suggestions...natural remedies, prescriptions, homeopathy, anything! Help!

Thanks!!

Kristine,

My ped and some of my sisters' peds now recommend giving fluids almost immediately. Don't wait until they stop throwing up. I start within one-two hours or so after throwing up. Just small amounts of clear liquid (not water) or ice chips. Children dehydrate so fast. Although your child will probably throw up the drink, the peds think that there will be some retention to prevent the dehydration. And just keep pushing the fluids.

One of my sisters sons got extremely dehydrated and had to be hospitalized from one illness. Since following this advice, she hasn't had that problem.

I'd heard of the BRAT (bananas, rice, applesauce, tea) diet for this but never the withhold everything for 24 hrs deal. I think it is too extreme, so I'm with Jenn - push fluids always.

Dd was a projectile vomitor and after tests etc...the recommendation was fluids, fluids, fluids. She always had a sippy cup beside her. We ate a ton of Jello and watermelon too. Anything with lots of liquid content.

Poor little chick, I hope he feels better soon!
