Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Really excited about this new book. Always on the lookout for the best new Christmas books each year. Tomie dePaola's Strega Nona's Gift that Jenn has recommended is a great addition for 2011.

I'd like to add this one I just read today - hot off the presses with a November publication:

The Third Gift by Linda Sue Park (author of another great picture book - The Firekeeper's Son)

Keywords: magi, wisemen, Christmas, Epiphany, myrrh, merchant, burial

Using the biblical texts regarding the gifts of the wisemen as starting reference, Parks develops a fictional story of them acquiring the myrrh. Doesn't take place at the nativiy but is a precursor story - with the magi traveling through a marketplace looking for the third gift to take to the baby King. Most of the book shares the story of a young boy and his father, who gathers and sells the resin myrrh - called "tears". The boy is learning the trade from his father, who is the best collector. The illustrations are beautiful; really feel authentic to the region and time. Great way to learn all about where myrrh comes from, how it is collected, what it was used for, while giving a little glimpse into the possible life of those living in the middle east at that time. It is an engaging story of ordinary people involved in an extraordinary event. Has fairly extensive author notes that give more info on myrrh and the biblical references.

Super excited about this - many rabbit trails could be made off this book...

Looks like a good one, Mary. I like the story line- a different approach.
Off to see what my options are for getting a look at it!

Ohhhhhh....looks great, Mary!

And, it's the same illustrator (Bagram Ibatoulline) as The First Christmas Stocking!!!!!! , Hana in the Time of Tulips, Mr. Lincoln's Boys, Adventures of Marco Polo, and others! Love this illustrator!

I just got this from my library and love it. Just beautiful. Also, I love the relationship between the father and the son in the story.
