Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We had fun yesterday with two "diary" type picture books. The first was The Gardener by Sarah Stewart. It's about a depression era family who sends their daughter to the city to live with her uncle and help him in his store. It's a beautiful story of the softening of his heart during her visit. The second was Diary of a Worm by Doreen Cronin. What fun! We laughed and laughed! Believe it or not, there actually were some comparisons to be made! If someone's itching for a silly venn diagram, these would work!

My son and I loved those books too. Oh, I love reading a great book with my son for the first time and I'm happy that you had such wonderful day.

Molly! I searched our shelves last week for our copy of this book--I wanted to review it for the blog. Couldn't find it, wah! You're right, it's hilarious. Very clever.

Hey, when I do find it & write the review, can I quote you? I love your idea of comparing it to other diary books--I'll have to look for the one you mentioned. Thanks for the suggestion!

Sure, you can quote me, Lissa. It is a fun book and I'm sure we we'll be reading it a bunch more times, too, before it has to be returned--I'm looking forward to reading it again .

Dawn, I'm going to head to my library's site now for Diary of a Wombat. Thanks for the recommendation!

Just wanted to give another (okay, two) thumbs up for The Gardener. What a fabulous summer/gardening book!

Pirate Diary

just got this one -- we have the Castle Diary (from the same author/illustrator team, and now i feel bad that we have the paperback version of Castle Diary. Pirate Diary is large and full-color! i also read a review on amazon that expressed disappointment about the paperback mostly b&w versions.

i'm still vacillating as to whether it's a good thing to have the kids read pirate books (what's redeemable about these guys?), but it is fun.
