I think this toddler activity deserves its own topic!
Currently, we are reading three board books, over and over again (gotta love mastery!) at my 2yo ds' request.
Jesse Bear, What Will You Wear? becomes "John Paul Bear, what will you wear?" He calls it "Daddy book" because his favorite part of the book is in the middle when Daddy comes home.
Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? is fun to do with simple sign language for each animal name (although we don't know sheep or frog yet.) When we get to the "Teacher" page, I change the word to "Mama."
I Can is full of action words to be acted out. Our favorite is "slide." It shows a boy in winter clothes sliding in the snow. But we know that it is really a baseball player sliding safely into home! Ds has quite a routine for this book and he likes to include his brothers in it..."dance" gets pretty silly  .
The first two books we have had for years. They are so well-loved that they are held together by lots of tape. It is so sweet to remember, Devin Bear and Aiden Bear and Ian Bear...

My kids all love the DK type board books with photos of real objects as well as lift the flap board books. I found a preciou board book today at our local Catholic bookstore called What Did Baby Jesus Do..all about how baby Jesus spent his days...sweet!

Finally getting a chance to respond to this...
A few that we enjoy that haven't yet been mentioned:
The Very Hungry Caterpillar - I had to mention this one because my 11-month-old son ADORES this book. I think the small flaps when the caterpillar goes through the days of the week really help little ones learn to turn pages on their own. And the colors and rhythm are lovely, of course.
Lois Ehlert's Planting a Rainbow - Great for early nature study! 
Dr. Seuss's ABC - this one is silly but fun.

Oh, and I wanted to add: I love this idea--very sweet. And when Daddy comes home is my favorite part of the book too.

I've noticed with a few of these favorites that it isn't always the book itself that we especially like but we develop our own little ways of reading that make the books special, like having inside jokes. For example my babies both giggled like crazy when we sneezed (over and over again) with bunny in Bunny's Noisy Book. I loved getting that totally predictable reaction.

Great list. I was actually looking for Catholic board books. I've looked at The George Brundage Catholic board books. They look wonderful. I wanted to have something like this but with flaps for my daughter to use at Mass to keep her quiet. She currently has a small board book with flaps which keeps her attention but it's not Catholic/christian. It needs to be small so she can handle it easily. Any ideas?

A favorite here that my 18-month-old discovered tonight is
Moo, Baa, La, La, La by Sandra Boynton...actually several of hers are favorites (Horns to Toes, Barnyard Dance, Blue Hat Green Hat, But Not the Hippopotamus).

We always loved Sandra Boynton also - I think Blue Hat Green Hat was the first "joke" that Samuel really got as a toddler.

I wanted to add some delightful board book treasures! I was reminded to add these since I'm putting our board books away for now to make room for other books.
These are all simple, delightful titles in the First-Look Nature Book series. Each of them is authored/illustrated by Hargrave Hands.
The titles in the series:

Each little board book follows the curious little animal as it explores near its home. The illustrations are realistic and quite charming!

We are visiting my sister right now and they have one of the new "Turn and Learn" board books from Catholic Book Publishing Corp. (St. Joseph Kids' Books). My two year old niece loves it - turning the wheel gives her something to interact with and find.

I heart board books!
The most read one currently around here is
Richard Scarry's Cars and Trucks from A to Z.
It's brilliant.
Regarding Catholic board books, the best one EVER is produced by Bethlehem books (part of a 3 part series yet to be released I think)... I'm sure it's made it into discussion around here???
The Saving Name of God the Son
FINALLY someone has made a glorious toddler book without insipid artwork! This book includes true masterpieces... and beautiful language... I highly recommend it. I can't wait for the others...

Oh, yes, it is lovely. I saw that one last summer at our conference - very nicely done, as Ellie mentioned it really is pictorially superior to most of the Catholic boardbook counterparts.

We love it! After all the board books we have that incorporate the beautiful art, so glad the Catholics finally decided to do something. I'm hoping the other ones in the series come out and it's not a dead project.
