Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

written and illustrated by fourth grade students of St. Mary's Catholic School in Mansfield, Massachusetts
~32 pages, printed by Scholastic, copyright 2005

My mom just brought this book to me (she found it at her school's book fair) and I love it!!

It combines a nature walk with poetry, specifically haiku (which I just love!) and there is both cut-paper art and watercolor throughout. Haiku is explained and examples are given, with instructions on how to use haiku to "capture a moment in time," like "taking a photo with words." There is even a section in the back for field notes if your children are inspired to take a haiku hike AND field notes about what the children saw (perfect for rabbit trails in botany, geography, ecology, geology, etc.) This isn't a how-to book so much as a fun picture book with lots of potential for CM homeschoolers. Living book? I vote yes!

And the best part of the book?...written by kids, for kids
