A school disctrict recently donated 1200 kids books to our library for the book sale at the end of this month. I’m a “friend of the library” so I am among those who get first dibs. My husband is afraid that we’ll have to buy another bookshelf because kids books (including hardback picture books) are usually priced at 2/$1, paperbacks 4/$1. So, in order to set limits for myself:
Would you buy classics to have at home if you know the library has them on the shelf and you can check them out anytime?
Would you buy books that are at the library but you / your kids check out repeatedly?
Would you buy anything that would have to be repaired?
Would you buy paperback or hardback only?
Would you upgrade paperback books you have to 'library bound' editions?
Would you only buy what will fit on your existing shelves if you had room for another bookshelf...?
Would you set yourself a price limit, bringing only as much cash as you were "allowed" spend (not necessarily set by your dh or 'budget', just a limit)?
or...
Would you buy everything you wanted that your vehicle could hold without damaging the suspension?

Probably not...unless it was a pretty good hardback book that I thought of as a classic in decent shape, but needing a few small minor repairs...I'd probably buy that.

I don't buy with bookshelves in mind...unless my husband directs me to do so! Recently, I came across a huge stash of books and didn't have the bookshelf space. I hunted for (and found) something very nice and quite inexpensive on Craigslist and now have more bookshelf space. If I were constrained by bookshelf space, I'd probably take a critical look at the kind of books I'm storing on my shelves currently and purge some twaddle to make room for the good stuff (not implying you have twaddle...just that that's what I'd do here!)

If my dh doesn't give me a limit, I wouldn't. Having said that, my dh always gives me a limit now....but I do pretty good at keeping up with my expenses as I go. A set amount of cash would be good if you were concerned you might overspend.

So...how long will it take me to drive to Nebraska?
We used to hit the big book sale in Virginia Beach every year...with a wagon! (We filled it, too, every single year.)
Sigh. I miss that.

We have GREAT library sales here in Seattle!!!!!!! It's WONDERFUL, but can be "too wonderful", if you know what I mean. I go to the libray weekly, so this influences how we BUY books.

No. Not if I'm at the library on a regular basis. If not, then yes, I would buy them.

It depends. When money was a factor, I set $$$ amount limit. But, now, space is more the factor, so I set a book-limit, and follow my criteria strictly.
Because SPACE and keeping things organized (with the ages of my kids, I'm the only one who can do this now) is such a huge issue for us, here is my purchasing criteria:
I only purchase (even if inexpensively)..........
::books my two library systems do not own
::books I / we will want to write in
::holiday books.....(because there is a limit on them, and even with 7 library cards, I'm nowhere CLOSE to having all the books I want at Christmas time).
::books that we would damage....ie: field books, etc.
::books that I'll want to pass on to my dc (ie: Catholic Mosaic books, neuman press books, their favorites, etc.)

Just something else to consider; not too sure if it applies to your library or not, but, our library turns out books fairly frequently. I can never rest easy that a favourite will always be available, they could and have, got rid of our favourites. Buy up is all I say

Some, but I'm pretty selective of absolute favorites as these books are very easy for us to get at library as needed.

Selectively, ones that were already on a wish list to buy. So limited to real favorites, probably ones that would get passed on to them later. One of my kids sometimes repeatedly checks out books I would not be at all interested in purchasing

Maybe - depends on the book. If I really wanted it and it was rare or such a great deal, then yes.

umm...probably not
Like Suzanne, I have some criteria for purchasing from library sales.
I tend to purchase
::specific series/authors of older books I'm collecting that are hard to find.
::reference type books we would use a lot which includes like Suzanne said, field guides, but also experiment books, craft books, etc.
::books that I'll want to pass on to my dc
::solid Catholic books if they are ever available

That is a very good point, and if our system only has a single copy of something we check out frequently, I will likely snatch that up!

Yes, as I'd like to have them around at all times. I've found that my children are more likely to read them or I'm more likely to read them to the children if they are around all the time.

Yes, if I judged the book worthwhile since I tend to end up doing so anyways. I've moved around too much and too often found that my favorite book is no longer in the library. [ I admit I also want to own my favorite books]

I'd plan on buying another bookcase (which reminds me, we need to pick up some more bookcases - our current 15 or so bookcases aren't enough any more - maybe, just maybe, my judgement isn't the best in such matters)

Um, like the time my husband came home with the set of Encyclopedia Britannica the library was giving away free to a good home? We've normally not had the money and enough good books available at the same time 
At this type of sale I tend to concentrate on looking for the classics, books by authors that I already know are worth reading (particularly OOP books) and non-fiction books on topics which my children or I am particularly interested or which will fill in gaps in our home library.

Almost all of the above. I might risk damage to my car's suspension.
Yes to classics. Yes to those books we check out frequently. (I probably paid the full retail price for them in library fines anyway.  ) I'd be pickier on paperbacks and damaged books. Might upgrade paperbacks to hardbound--if they weren't part of a series or if they had the entire series. I like books in a series to be of the same size & style as they look better on bookshelves that way.
Additionally, I'd look for good reference books for any upcoming reports or subjects that interest any of us. Might select a few "gift books" intended for others that I'd probably end up keeping for myself. Wouldn't set a price limit, but might wait until the library clearance with the $5 bag of books. (I had to clear out bookshelf space for that bargain. There is no existing bookshelf space at my house not already in use.)

I would have a cash limit. $X in my purse when I walked in fully allowing myself to spend it all if I found the right books.

Yes I would. And I drive a Suburban with a heavy duty tow package.

Thanks, everyone for your thoughts and opinions. I had fun reading your responses! Allegiance Mom in NY - I am 8 months pregnant, but the librarians helped me out. 
Most of the books I got were library bound and in really good shape. (I even found an OOP book by Elizabeth Goudge for myself for $2!). I mostly bought books that our library does not have, upgraded a few paperbacks, and picked up some classics that I'd like to refer to often like a library bound edition of "The Real Mother Goose" and a beautifully illustrated "Aesop's Fables" to replace the one we have that is literally falling apart. Also, I was really surprised to find a copy of "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons" for $1!
My husband doesn't get it, but I knew you ladies would understand!

Well since this discussion started I have been told by our librarian that they are not keeping books older than 10 years!!! 
If we were so lucky as to have a sale (which we are not, as they just give them to rotary- whole 'nother story) I would buy anything and everything decent.
