Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm a member of the forum... I've found it to be a great place. I've met many good young people, and had some wonderful conversations with them on many different topics.

Is this based completely on Regina Doman's novels? My 12 year old loves them! She may be interested in this forum. Can you tell me if it is appropriate for a child of that age?

Irene, I know we have some girls as young as 13 on the board.

It isn't exclusively about the novels. There's a sub-section dedicated to other topics, where topics range from lighthearted discussions of vintage fashion to conversation on Catholic issues. Because the young people there find it a place to discuss issues with others who share their faith and values, there are some discussions of purity and chastity, and how it applies, and etc. The 'tough' topics are of course always discussed in a good and delicate way and from a Catholic point of view, but I don't know how you'd feel about your 12-year-old encountering them.

Kacky or anyone

What is the age appropriateness of these novel? I presume OK for an avid 12 year old reader?

Oh goodie, I was just looking for more of this type of book last night.. I saw these and was wondering about them.

My 12 yr old loved Princess Academy and I think has started Fairest. I read both and they were good.

Are these along those lines?

I like RD's novels very much, but they do deal with some dark, difficult topics, though in an excellent, Catholic way. I let my teens (15,13 and 12) read the first one. My oldest read the second. The next two are darker and more difficult. I will wait for the older teens on those.

Thanks Bridget. My dd was begging to read them - but I felt uneasy after reading some of the descriptions. The first one is The Shadow of the Bear - correct? I will go ahead with letting her read this one.

Jodie - my dd was so excited to hear that your dd likes Princess Academy and Fairest. She said she has lots of recommendations for your dd which are in the same style. I am about to pm you her info..

My dd age 13 (weeks away from 14) has read all of them. She took a writing workshop with Mrs. Doman. I couldn't keep them out of her hands. She's handled them well. I have started Shadow of the Bear myself, haven't finished. So far fine with me. There is talk about a character being a drug dealer but that's about it that I have found that could be too worldly for some.

My dd's good friend, who is a big critic of books (her mom has run a book club for girls for literally years!) thought they were fine but she said she could see the preachy stuffs and didn't like them that much. To me this a HUGE endorsement. This child is very sensitive to things and definitely has been taught by her mother, how to read a book and to think about the themes that are coming across. So for her to say it might be a tad bit too preachy...I thought then it must be okay

But just like the others said...we're not on the prairie anymore, this is true teen type material.

Also...my dd really really loves Catholic Reluctantly. It's about a high school called John Paul the Great (how funny is that, it was written before the real No.VA one was founded!) This book is apparently the first in a series of books that Mrs. Doman is going to edit. The authors are all graduates of Christendom and Franciscan. I'll have to find out more details from my dd...but the second one I believe I heard her squeal about is due out very very soon.

OK - just revisiting this. My dd was allowed to read The Shadow of the Bear only. In retrospect I would not have let her read it. In my opinion all the books are for older teens - 15 and up.

I reviewed the Catholic Reluctantly series too - these are for older teens too in my opinion.

And as for the forum my dd is not allowed on it - firstly the draw factor and secondly the fact she would in effect be talking with "strangers" online. Again when she is 15 or 16 it may be appropriate.
