Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

......in 2011?

NOT what you are in the middle of now....but is the FIRST book you expect to START in '11?

I am thinking for me, if I can get it at the library.....will be BRIDESHEAD REVISITED

I am one of the few people who has not read it yet. (have you?)

Just wondering what plans my fellow bibliophils have.....

Wildflowers by Tamara McKinley, it's waiting for me to pick up when the Library re-opens. Which is today!

I read BR years ago as a teen, loved it!! I should re-visit that too.

Does my Kindle for Itouch count????

I started reading Freckles by Gene Stratton Porter yesterday. Its been a rough few weeks and I wanted something uplifting, hoping this fits the bill.

Mary, you crack me up. I'm embarrassed to admit I haven't read it either ... should I add it to my list?

I'm getting 2 late Christmas presents: The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Anything and What Technology Wants. sort of opposite ends of the spectrum; which I read first will depend on my mood when that smiling box arrives ...

I am planning on reading Before I Go: Letters to our Children About What Really Matters by Peter Kreeft. It seems like a light, encouraging read which is what I need right now.

Mimi, I read Freckles and also A Girl of the Limberlost a couple of years ago. Neither was my usual type of book, but I enjoyed them both. Hope you do, too!

Hahahaha.

I've already read a few...reading addict that I am.

My first serious read of the year is Julian of Norwich: A Contemplative Biograpy by Amy Frykholm. Suprisingly good so far...and definitely making me want to read this intriguing saint's complete writings.

First on my list is O, Pioneers by Willa Cather. I've been trying to read a book along with my dds history studies, Pioneering and the Frontier are our next stops. Can't wait to start .

Just read this a few months ago - yes a very quick read, each letter is just a few pages. But it is very profound and filled with great insight presented in a very readable way. My dad died this spring and I sort of felt like he was "talking" through Kreeft in many ways. If every child took Kreeft's advice to heart...

Sorry to hear about your dad, Mary. I haven't been on here for a while. I originally bought the book for my almost 15 yr. old dd for Christmas, then after skimming it, I thought, "I think I'll read it first, then give it to her for her birthday in March". I should know what I'm giving her, right.      Glad to hear you liked it.

A huge fat "Don't Do It!!!" from me regarding Brideshead Revisited!      I felt out of the loop for not reading it so I bore through to the end and pretty much hated the whole thing. Yes, yes, I know the anaologies are there and the great perspective on a particular social class in a period of history blah, blah, blah. But I found it to be a terrible read.        When I finished, I said to myself "I want my 5 hours back." (or however long it took me... whatever it was, it felt like a waste of my time, despite any cultural literacy improvements I may have made.) Add to your list a million other titles of the "great" books instead.

I just started "Vision of the Anointed" and am loving it so far. I've always been a fan of Thomas Sowell's editorials and just discovered he is quite a prolific author... so his writings are top of my list.

I am not a fiction reader, so I like books to suit where I am in my faith journey.
THis is recommened by my Priest after a long discussion about a family issue.

My first book will be finding sanctuaryfinding Sanctuary- monastic steps for everyday life- Abbot christopher jamison.

Oh, this is too funny. My ds has this same reaction when reading books that he doesn't connect with. When he narrates, he will say, "And then came all the blah, blah, blah part", which is my clue that the book was not a "living" thing for him (otherwise he can go on and on and on....)

Aah, I liked it, except for the part on the ship. That just didn't add anything to the story IMO, although I can see why it's in there, part of his "journey."

I got the BBC miniseries first and started watching, then quit after one disk and read the book, then finished watching. liked it so much I bought the discs. (and the book!) But to each her own!

The first new book I am starting this year will be Les Miserables which I am reading along with a friend. It should keep us busy for awhile.

However, I also started just barely before the new year, The Grunt Padre about Father Vincent Capodanno. I've wanted this book for about 2 yrs, and our dear SeaStar gave it to me, autographed by the author, for Christmas! True friend!

Yes, I realize that I seem to be in the wildly outnumbered minority in not liking Brideshead. I don't know where it or I went wrong. I am a bibliophile extraordinaire and love most classics... and appreciate almost every book I've ever read.

But this? Oy... I just can't understand the accolades (except for those from the gay rights movement who misinterpret characters in the book).

Brideshead Revisited - Had wanted to read this till my sister read it and told me her reaction which agreed with Ellie's opinion.

O Pioneers- I read this several years ago and enjoyed it, but it has some mature scenes that you may want to pre-read.

Thanks for the heads up. Just finished the first chapter . I try to pick a book just for me, which I read when my girls are doing their reading (usually during the boys nap time).

They're currently reading through The Little House on the Prairie series.

I thought this would be a good way of encouraging the CM living books philosophy (although truth be told no encouragement was needed, it has just given me an excuse to enjoy a good book too ).
