I'm  leaving Dickens and Austen and Bronte' behind in search of a new fix. My friend insists that I try Elizabeth Gaskell. But which do I read first?
North and South?
Wives and Daughters?
Another?
And, since I love notes and commentary (the more, the better), should I order Vintage Classics? Wordsworth Classics? Penguin Classics? Oxford World's Classics?

If you like characters rather than action, try Cranford. Otherwise I'd go for North and South.

If you love those authors, you will also LOVE Gaskell. In my opinion (though I'm no literary critic), Wives and Daughters is more like Austen, and North and South more like Dickens. Either of those would be a great start. And both have excellent film versions that you can find on Netflix.
Have fun! I wish I could read them again for the first time.

Thank you for bringing this up. I read North and South, but I've only seen the movie version of Wives and Daughters. I love both movies--they are perfect to iron by. I spent an entire afternoon one Saturday in October catching up on all the ironing in the house (for months, really) and watching Wives and Daughters (both North and South and Wives and Daughters are on Netflix Instant Viewing!). It really was a lovely afternoon

My dd 15 and 13 watched North and South with me a few weeks back and now have their noses in her books. I believe they are working on Wives and Daughters at the moment. I read them quite a while back I think I need to revisit them again.
Next to Pride and Prejudice movie, North and South is our favorite! Love it!

I just discovered this author (not sure how I could have gone this long without knowing about her!). And I am slightly ashamed to admit that we watched the movies before I got to the books. But I really can't read novels and take care of my family at the same time and dh, happily, loves these kinds of movies, too, so we watched Wives and Daughters and North and South recently on Netflix instantly.
We enjoyed both--Wives and Daughters is probably the better movie: better acting, better set, etc. But North and South was the far more interesting story and that is the one I immediately put on my wishlist. It's got the Dickens social stuff with a love story very similar to Pride and Prejudice.
We haven't tried Cranford at all, yet, but it's in our Netflix queue.

Oh, and I love notes and commentary, too, and requested the Norton Critical edition after reading the reviews.
