Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

The kids and I watched this movie last week..........and it is based on a book.

I tried to find this book through our 13 northern CA libraries......but no one has it...........does anyone have one they would part with, in the act of decluttering..........or lend to me? I do not want to buy one, just read it.

Thanks!

Chari,
What a surprise!!!

The children and I are all watching The Ultimate Gift right now. I came into the living room after it had started so Kayleigh and Garrett filled me in on what I had missed.

I went online to find out more about the movie (and to see if there was a book ) then came here to see if anyone else had watched it.

So far I think it's great.

My dh and I saw Ultimate Gift while it was in the theaters. We were surprised (don't know why in our pop-culture society) that such a great movie got very little press and was in the theaters only a short time. I really like this movie. I'm going to check my library for the book!

THANKS so much folks for mentioning this movie. We watched it tonight for "family movie night" and it was amazing -- altho definitely a multi-hankie one!

If you haven't seen it yet -- really do try as it is one of those that actually deserves the "feel good movie of the year" accolades!

I'm waiting on the book from the library and am interested to see how it is same or different!

THANKS again folks for making our home such a wonderful place with all the recommendations, suggestions and advice.

We loved this movie, as a family. I even had to watch it a second time

I found the book at Walmart and was a bit disappointed in the way it came across to me...........not really offering much more than what the movie did......and I SO wanted it to be better than the movie, ykwim?

Anyway, you check it out Mary, and let us know what you think.

BTW........I do not feel I can recommend it to ALL ages.......what "heads up" would you give?

It seems as all of you were okay with the content for your families. I was uncomfortable a few times.....VERY few times.......the red flags of immodesty......that went no where thankfully. And the "prison" he spent time in was kind of scary for the youngers....

Didn't you all just love the homeless guy and his bench

Courtney, I never even heard of it out in theaters.....

Mary, we will be wanting a review

MaryG........ditto

.....it is such a classy movie.

Now I want to see it again!

When we watch movies as a family, sometimes those kind of issues make for good "talking points". I thought they handled those scenes very well -- not dwelling on the uckiness too long or having the bimbo at the beginning be too much a part of the movie.

oh yeah and the fact that the main guy kept ending up on the bench! The other really good bit was when the bimbo decides that it's ok now to date the man who "owes her dinner" ....

I loved the little girl. She was just amazing and never minced words!!!!! I was also drawn by how much she loved her mother and didn't want to leave her alone.

I am almost finished reading the book that I am reading right now and then I will be starting the "Ultimate Life" I will definitely let you all know how it is.

The sequel the "Ultimate Life" was not quite as good. He is fighting in court against his family to prove he met the requirements for the inheritance. Some things totally didn't mesh with the previous book/movie.

It was good just not as good.

We watched this movie in the last year and then I went to the library to check out the book. I have to say that I enjoyed the movie more than a book..That's rare. I felt that the movie filled in more detail than the book.

Gotta agree with Carmie -- the movie was much better! Go figure.

Well, I must have missed this movie in 2008, but just watched it and must say it is a "must see."

Some of us needed hankies , but what a wonderful family movie with great values and discussion points!

I also really appreciate the reviews of the book, because when we finished watching, Amy (15) said that we needed to get the book from the library NOW--but after checking it out here---I now know that we will skip the book---how unusual for us....

Oh, Joann....I"m so glad you got to see it, and thanks for resurrecting the thread! I watched it a couple years ago and loved it, but I don't think dh ever did....and it's actually a non-action/man-movie that I know he'd appreciate.

It's SO GOOD!!!!!!!! Love it!!!!!!!!

Oh, I was so excited to see this thread! Syncletica generously mailed us the DVD The Ultimate Gift for Christmas! She said she heard many good things about it, but had not yet seen it! Looking forward to watching it with my family Thank you again Syncletica!!!

I gave this to my fam for Christmas last year. I would love to make you all copy DVDs....but I think that's illegal.

At first, a couple of kids kind of giggled like Oh Mom this is cheesy. But after a couple of viewings it became a favorite.

My daughter read the book---I think she got it at the library. She said it was quite different from the movie?    She liked the book a bit better, but thought they were both good. I think Abigail Breslin is fantastic in it. At first my kids were bugged that it looked like she was always wearing weird lipstick. And then they figured it out as the movie went on....!

We loved it too but didn't let our younger crowd (10 and under) watch it yet because of the things Chari mentioned. Maybe we could fast forward through those parts because it does have such a good message.
